prologue.

every twenty-four hours the world turns over on somebody who's sitting
on top of it.

i know.it happened to me.

well, maybe i wasn't perched exactly on top of the world, but i was
close.i was approaching my twenty-fifth anniversary as a performer in
the country music business, and while my records and my songs weren't
burning up the popularity charts at that very moment, i could look back
across a career that had spanned nearly a quartercentury and count
seventy- two single records of my own that had made those charts and
countless hundreds of songs i had written that had done likewise for
other artists who had recorded them.i had released nearly fifty albums,
won more songwriting awards than any other writer in the history of
country music, been named male vocalist of the year, half of the duet of
the year with two different singing partners, Songwriter of the year
several times, hosted and starred in the country music television Series
of the year, written the Song of the year, twice recorded the Record of
the year, employed the band of the year, and had once been voted along
with hank williams and harlan howard, as one of the three top
Songwriters of all-time!

i had been elected to the nashville Songwriters association hall of fame
and to the georgia music hall of fame.my biography had appeared in who's
who in america, i had hung gold records on my wall, hosted my own
major-network television game show, been an actor in a tv soap opera,
appeared in several movies, and was partowner and national spokesman for
one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in america.i had served
eleven terms spanning sixteen years as an officer and member of the
board of directors of the ∙ the cashbox country Singles charts (nineteen
58-nineteen 82) international country music association.

i had travelled nearly everywhere in the world that i had ever dreamed
of going and met people i'd never dared dream i'd meet.i had been there
when my mom and dad celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, and i
was the father of three bright, healthy children who had never given me
a moment's trouble in their lyves.in nineteen 82 i was even honored at a
luncheon in atlanta and given a trophy proclaiming me as Southeast
