announcement.
"As you all know, today is the big day," Ms. Van Cleef continued. "When you
enter the conference room, you'll find tables have been set up for each
employment location that was described in your au pair books. You've all
received a computer list showing your first, second, and third choice of
location. We only gave second choices when a location was simply overloaded as a
first choice," she explained.
Emma, Sam, and Carrie looked at their sheets and grinned. They'd really lucked
out-all getting their first choice.
"Please proceed to the table with the sign marked with the name of your area,"
Ms. Van Cleef went on. "Once you are all settled, we'll invite your prospective
employers in to interview you. I wish you all the best of luck and a wonderful
au pair experience," she concluded.
There was polite applause as the double doors opened into the conference room.
The crowd streamed through the doors and headed for their proper table.
"It's over there!" Sam called, spying the large Sunset Island sign. She led her
friends toward the long table. Four chairs were set up behind the table for the
au pairs, with lots of chairs set up for the prospective employers on the
opposite side, "I wonder who the fourth au pair is," Carrie asked, eyeing the
empty seat.
She didn't have to wait long to find out. A black-haired beauty with startling
light blue eyes and a gorgeous, golden tan rushed over to the table.
"Not Lorell," Sam groaned under her breath. "Anyone but Lorell." Lorell
Courtland hailed from Atlanta, Georgia, and was as wealthy as she was obnoxious.
Lorell had been in Sam's first "get acquainted" group. As Lorell had let
everyone in the group know, she had recently made her debut at the Beaux Arts
Ball in Atlanta, and she had flown hi to New York for the convention in her
daddy's private jet. When Sam had finally asked her why she was bothering to
work for the summer, Lorell just laughed and said that her daddy thought it
would "build her character." Lorell rolled her eyes heavenward when she said
this, as if the idea was just too droll. Sam privately doubted that Lorell had
any character to build.
"Hey, yW." Lorell trilled. "Why Sammi, how utterly fantastic that we should be
goin' to the same place!" Lorell sat down next to Carrie and pushed her sleek
black hair behind one diamond-studded ear.
"Hi, Lorell," Sam answered her. "Do you guys know each other?" she asked Emma
and Carrie. They shook their heads no, so Sam introduced them to Lorell.
Lorell gave them her most winning smile. "I'm so pleased to meet you," she
purred.
"Where did you get such a terrific tan in April?" Carrie asked Lorell.
"Oh, we have a tanning salon in the gym on our estate," Lorell explained.
"We do, too," Sam said in a total deadpan, "but I prefer the pale look." Lorell
laughed as if this was just the funniest thing she had ever heard. She knew Sam
lived in the tiny town of Junction, Kansas, and she knew Sam's family was
totally middle class. "Oh, Sammi, you are just hilarious!" Carrie looked at Sam.
"Sammi?" Lorell stared appraisingly at Emma's outfit and raised her eyebrows.
"Lovely ensemble," she said. "And the watch is a Cartier, isn't it?" Emma
blushed and tried to look nonchalant. "It was a graduation present," she said
smoothly.
"Isn't that sweet," Lorell said.
