"Bennett, Cherie - Sunset Island 005 - Sunset Reunion (b)" - читать интересную книгу автора (Bennett Cherie)England. But somehow a cocktail party for a rock superstar made her as nervous as if she'd never been anywhere.
"Faith and Mark, I guess, and Graham and all of his band, and their wives and girlfriends," Carrie said as the girls got on the elevator. "Beyond that, I don't know." The party had already begun when the girls entered the large suite. Thirty or forty people were drinking champagne and eating food from a huge buffet spread on a long corner table. Graham's latest CD blared through an excellent sound system someone had set up. "Wow," Sam breathed when they entered the room. She turned quickly to Emma. "I really look okay?" Emma smiled reassuringly at Sam. It was amazing that someone as gorgeous and ostentatious as Sam could sometimes be so insecure. "Fabulous," Emma told her. "I'm going to get some great shots here," Carrie said, lifting one camera and looking around eagerly. "Hi!" Mark called to them, quickly crossing the room to the three girls. "You look great," he added to Carrie. "Can I get any of you a drink?" "A Diet Coke or something," Carrie said. Sam and Emma seconded that. "Be right back," Mark promised, loping away. Sam nudged Came meaningfully. "He's desperate for you," she said. "Yeah, right," Carrie said, laughing. She lifted her camera and quickly shot Graham in conversation with his bass player near the buffet table_ "I'm telling you, I know desperate when I seeЧ" Sam stopped in midsentence. "That can't be who I think it is," she said, peering across the room at a blond-haired guy in the corner. At that moment the two girls who were partially blocking Sam's view moved, and she grabbed Emma's arm like a vise. "It is! It's Johnny Angel! Omigod, I'm dying." Emma and Carrie looked across the room. It really was Johnny Angel. John Angles, who had changed his name to Johnny Angel after an old rock ballad, was without a doubt the hottest up-and-coming new star in the rock world. His handsome face and lean, muscular body were driving girls wild at his concerts. He had started out as a dancer, and now incorporated athletic, sexy dancing into his act as no male rock star had ever done before. The press was calling him the male Madonna, and comparing his dancing to Paula Abdul's. The amazing thing was that Johnny Angel was only twenty-six years old, and his first album had only been out for four months. At that very moment his first single, "Breathless for You," was number one on the rock charts. "Maybe Johnny's a friend of Graham's," Carrie said. "They just met, actually," Mark said, handing the girls their drinks. "He's opening for Graham tonight, so we thought we'd invite him and his band to the cocktail party." "Is he married?" Sam said, staring across the room. "Not that I know of," Mark said. "Engaged? Promised? Here with anyone?" Sam asked. "All I can vouchJpr is that he came to this party by himself," Mark said with a laugh. "Beyond that, you're on your own." "I'm going to get him," Sam said, her eyes narrowing. "Sam!" Emma said, shocked at her friend's behavior. 82 ^ Sam coolly handed Emma her soda. "Watch me," she said. "Just watch me." Emma, Carrie, and Mark watched as Sam headed across the room toward Johnny Angel. "Oh, excuse me!" Sam said as she bumped into Johnny Angel and sent his glass of champagne flying. "No, it was my fault," Johnny said, catching Sam's arms and helping to steady her. - "It's kind of crowded in here," Sam said with a sexy grin. She looked ruefully at his now-damp white T-shirt. "No damage," Johnny said easily. He looked Sam over with curiosity. "Well, sorry again," Sam said, and began to walk away. "Wait a second," Johnny said. "I didn't catch your name." "I didn't throw it," Sam said innocently, and tossed her hair over her shoulder as she walked back to her friends. "What did you say to him?" Carrie asked her. "His eyes followed you all the way across the room!" "It's what I didn't say," Sam said with a grin. "I pretended to bump into him, and then acted totally disinterested. I even pretended not to recognize him. I figure since girls are always throwing themselves at him, that ought to drive him crazy!" "It's kind of manipulative, isn't it?" Emma asked. "What difference does it make, as long as it works?" Sam asked her. "Hey, Carrie! Hi, girls!" Graham ambled over to them and draped an arm around Carrie's shoulder. "I didn't know you two were here with Carrie! It's great to see you!" "I invited them to the cocktail party," Mark said. "I hope that was all right." "It's great! No problem!" Graham replied. "I know these girls from the islandЧgreat kids, all three of them. So, did you get some good shots this afternoon, Carrie?" "I think so," Carrie said. She didn't like this at all. Graham really was acting weird. He'd always been very nice to her, but theirs had still been an employer-employee relationship. "Hello, Graham. I hope you're enjoying the party," Faith said, coming up next to Graham. "Rock On knows how to throw a party," Graham said. "The guys are all having a great time." "How many more stops do you have on this tour?" Faith asked. "Twelve or thirteen," Graham said. "I lose track." "It must be hard on the kids, since Claudia came with you this time out," Faith said sympathetically. "My kids are fine," Graham said tersely. "Excuse me." He headed for the bathroom. Faith didn't take her eyes off him. "He's under a lot of pressure," Carrie said softly. "It's more than that and you know it," Faith said under her breath. She turned to Carrie. "Snap his picture right when he's coming out of the John." Carrie was taken aback. "What . . . what are you talking about? I meanЧ" |
