Emma nodded with interest, but actually the image of Kurt jumped into her mind. He, too, was working hard to put himself through school.
"Are you a student?" Kevin asked.
Emma nodded. "Freshman at Goucher," she said.
Kevin raised his eyebrows. "My, my, the most expensive college in the country," he said.
Emma smiled because she didn't know what to say. She hadn't expected him to have heard of tiny, elite Goucher, but evidently he had. Now she was sorry she'd mentioned it.
"I guess you don't have to worry about working two jobs, huh?" Kevin said, taking in Emma's Cartier watch and her large diamond stud earrings.
This is beginning to remind me entirely too much ofKurt, she thought. Why should I have to defend myself because I'm rich?
"Listen, IЧ" Emma began, but she was interrupted by the return of Sam with her friend Ed.
"Whew, it's hot out there!" Sam yelled, holding her hair off her neck with one hand and fanning herself with the other.
"It's great aerobic exercise," Ed yelled. "Let's go dance some more!"
"Oh, Ed, you haven't even worked up a sweat yet," Sam moaned. "You're in better shape than anybody I know. It's disgusting."
"Would you like to dance?" Kevin asked Emma.
"Actually, I was going to suggest we go get some food," Sam said before Emma could respond. "I'm starved. Where's Carrie?"
"I'm right here," Carrie said, coming up to them with Jonathan in tow.
Everyone was introduced all around.
"So, who's hungry?" Sam asked. "We could go next door to Lefty's for pizza."
They all agreed it was a great idea, and started for the door. But before they got there they ran into Danny.
"Danny!" Sam said with surprise. "I can't believe you're here!"
"Hi," he said.
Sam introduced the guys to Danny. "You never go dancing," Sam marveled.
"Well, tonight I just, urn, felt like it," Danny said.
"Hey, want to come with us for pizza?" Sam asked. "Or I guess you don't, if you wanted to dance."
"Oh, well, I guess I could dance later," Danny said. He fell in with the group, and they headed next door to Lefty's.
"I just cannot believe it," Sam whispered
to Emma and Carrie when Danny was up ahead talking with Ed, Kevin, and Jonathan. "I've begged him dozens of times to come to Stingray's with me, and he always turns me down! Why did he show up tonight?"
"Because he's obviously crazy about you, and he finally got up the nerve, that's why!" Carrie whispered back.
Sam stopped and stared at her friends. "You think so? You don't think he just wanted to go dancing? I mean, I didn't even tell him that's where we'd be!"
"He guessed!" Emma said as they started walking again. "Like you said, the guy is crazy about you."
"Gee, maybe it's actually true," Sam marveled.
"Sam, you're the one who told us!" Carrie said, laughing.
"Well, sure," Sam said, "but that doesn't mean I really believed it!"
Emma and Carrie were still laughing when they walked into the pizza parlor.
FOUR
"Whoa, did you see that guy?" Sam asked. She turned around to catch another glimpse of the retreating figure in ripped white jeans and a sky-blue T-shirt.
Carrie and Emma spun her back around. "No distractions," Emma warned. "We've got to find our luggage." It was the next afternoon, and the girls had just landed at Miami International Airport.
"This place is a zoo," Carrie remarked as a girl in running shorts darted away from two guys in fraternity sweatshirts with the sleeves cut off.
"I've always wanted to come here for Christmas break," Sam said with glee. "I've heard it's the wildest place on earth. She looked up at the television screen suspended near the rear wall of the baggage pickup
area. "It says the luggage from our flight is coming in on carousel 8A."
"Hey, look over there!" Emma said, pointing to a cute guy holding up a sign with Carrie's name on it.
The three girls headed over to him.
"Hi, I'm Carrie."
"Hi, I'm Mark Weiss," the guy said, shaking Carrie's hand. "I'm Faith O'Connor's assistant, from Rock On magazine. She asked me to come over and meet your plane."
"Wow, that was really nice of her," Carrie said. She introduced Emma and Sam. "I think our luggage is about to come in."
"Give me the tickets and I'll get it for you," Mark offered.
"You're on," Sam said. All three girls handed Mark their baggage checks.
"I rented a car for you," Mark continued. "I hope a Pontiac Firebird is okay."
"Oh, fine," Carrie said. She looked like she was in a daze.
"Great!" Mark said with a grin. He scanned the baggage pickup area, which was a maze of people. "Listen, it's a mob scene here. Why don't you three just have a seat over there?" he said, pointing to a nearby
cluster of chairs and couches, "and after I retrieve your stuff we'll go get your car. Oh, can you describe the bags to me?"
"Let's see," Carrie mused, "Emma's is a white leather case that has her initials in gold, Sam's is a black-and-white tweed, and mine's a green duffle bag." Carrie blushed. "It's um, left over from camp," she explained.
