"Well, so did I, sort of," Carrie replied. Josh was Carrie's old high school boyfriend, with whom she'd had a long-term relationship. "So what's the problem?" Sam asked, reaching for another nacho. "He's there; Billy's here. Love the one you're with, that's what I always say." Patsi, a waitress who had worked at the Play Cafe for two summers in a row, placed a large deluxe pizza in front of them. Sam and Emma each took a piece, but Carrie just played with the straw in her diet Coke. "The problem, guys," Carrie said slowly, "is that I got a letter from New Jersey today, from Josh. And he told me that he's started going out with someone else. And that it could get serious." "No wonder you dropped that water balloon today," Sam joked. "You were thinking about Josh while you were playing catch with Billy." "I just don't know what to think any- more," Carrie said. "I mean, I thought that this might happen, and I told myself that this is a free country, and that Josh is free to do exactly what I'm doing. But now that it's actually happening, I feel awful!" "Well, he was your first love," Emma said. "It must be hard to let go." Carrie nodded miserably. "I know how unfair I'm being; I just can't help myself!" "Hey, you're being way too hard on yourself, if you want my opinion," Sam said, licking some cheese off her finger. "I just feel so ... torn!" Carrie said earnestly. She looked over at Emma who was daintily biting into a slice of pizza. "You're so lucky," she told her. "No kidding she's lucky," Sam piped up. "All the money in the world and the most buff guy on the island. I say share the wealth!" "No, I'm serious, Sam," Carrie said. "When I look at Kurt and Emma together, laughing, joking, just hanging out, I know that they are the only ones for each other in the entire world. I feel . . . well, I just want the same thing for myself." Emma nodded. "I know. I'm really lucky. But isn't it impossible to love two guys at the same time? I mean, I could never love some other guy as much as I love Kurt, not unless Kurt and I weren't together anymore, and I don't believe that will happen." "It won't," Carrie said with a sigh. "Sometimes I agree with SamЧyou really do seem to lead a charmed life!" "Oh, I don't . . ." Emma protested. "I'm just kidding," Carrie said. "Sort of." "Hey, not to interrupt the heavy sighing going on here, but do either of you want the last slice of pizza?" Sam asked. "We could never deprive you," Carrie told her. "Good," Sam said happily, reaching for the slice. "Then Til give you some of my best advice-to-the-lovelorn. You know I think much better on a full stomach!" "Speak, oh wise-one," Carrie told her. "Okay, here's the deal," Sam said, happily chomping on the pizza. "Billy is crazed for you and you are crazed for him. Josh is still pining away for you, but your feelings for him are based more on what was than what is. Have I got that right?" "Well, that's different," Sam said. "In that case, I recommend stringing Josh along for some time to come." "That's terrible advice!" Emma exclaimed. "And completely unfair!" Carrie added. "Yeah, but it's probably what you'll do, anyway," Sam said philosophically. Carrie didn't say anything. She was too afraid that Sam was right. "It's a perfect Zit People song," lan Tem-pleton said emphatically. "Is not," retorted AHie Jacobs. "Is too!" "Is not!" "Is!" "Uh, maybe you guys should just try it out and see how it actually plays?" Carrie ventured equivocally, from the top step of the Templeton's basement. It was the next day and she and Sam were watching fourteen-year-old lan's band, Lord Whitehead and the Zit People, at one of their biweekly rehearsals. Since Allie and Becky Jacobs, the fourteen-year-old identical twins that Sam took care of, had recently been added to the band as backup singers, Sam had come over with them to watch the rehearsal. The other four members of the Zit People stood around looking bored during this exchange between lan and Allie. "Sometimes I wonder if the band would put up with lan if he wasn't Graham Perry's son," Sam whispered to Carrie. lan's dad, Graham TempletonЧor as he was known to the public, Graham PerryЧwas one of the top rock stars in the world. "Sometimes I wonder the same thing," Carrie agreed with a sigh. "What really gets me is that lan is such a great kid when he's not working on this band thing!" "Well, you'd never know it to watch him right now," Sam observed. "I can handle this myself, Carrie," lan said, an exasperated look on his face. Carrie traded looks with Sam. "I guess having his baby-sitter butt in is not high on lan's hit parade," Sam murmured. "Look," lan said, turning to his band, "What kind of music does this bandЧmy bandЧplay?" "Industrial music!" piped up Mark Woods, one of the original members of the band. "Whether we have backup singers or not!" Becky and Allie Jacobs both shot him spiteful looks. "And what is industrial music?" he asked them. |
