about Graham having to meet with some executives from his record label-and
Carrie had been in charge of the two Templeton kids from morning until bedtime.
The kids were pretty well-behaved the first day or so, but it's been downhill
ever since, she assessed. I guess that's why they call it a summer job instead
of a summer vacation.
"Well, it doesn't matter," Ian said.
"What doesn't matter?" Carrie asked him.
"Matter if Dad mentions the Zit People on Donahue, of course," Ian said
brightly. "The way my band is going we're gonna get a ton of publicity on our
own. Probably even have a label deal in a year or so." Carrie laughed. "It's
good to be optimistic, Ian," she said. "Now finish your cereal." She pointed at
the nearly-full bowl in front of him. Miraculously, Ian actually picked up his
spoon and started eating. Carrie looked at the clock. Nine-fifteen.
Graham and Claudia get back at nine tonight, she thought to herself. Then, I'm
going to sleep for two days straight, and then spend two days in Billy's arms.
On second thought, maybe I'll switch the order of those activities.
Because all of her time had been taken up with Ian and Chloe, Carrie hadn't had
a free moment to see her boyfriend, Billy Sampson, leader of the popular local
rock group Flirting With Danger. I really miss him. Really.
"Is Daddy on TV yet?" Chloe asked. "Because I'm ready to watch. Look Carrie, I
finished everything." Carrie pulled herself out of her reverie about Billy and
looked at Chloe's plate. It was clean.
"Good for you, Chloe!" Carrie said, reaching for her dish. "Why don't you go
watch some TV, and then Ian and I will come in to watch your dad with you?"
"Okay," Chloe said. "But first I'm going to put on my special hat." Special hat?
What special hat? Carrie thought. I don't even want to think what that's all
about.
"You do that," Carrie said. "We'll meet you in the family room." She looked at
the clock again. Nine twenty-five. This day is never going to end. Never!
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the show," said Phil Donahue, as the camera
came right in on his face.
Carrie, Sam, Ian, and Chloe-wearing an Easter bonnet she had evidently found in
one
of her mother's closets-were sprawled out on the floor of the Templeton's
family room, watching the big-screen television set.
"Where's Daddy?" Chloe said, a concerned look on her face.
"Ssssh!" Ian said. "He'll be on in a minute." Carrie watched as Donahue made
some short opening comments about how rock and roll had changed the entire
world. "And now," he said, "I want to introduce the man whose music has changed
the face of rock and roll forever. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome a living
rock legend, Mr. Graham Perry!" The crowd on TV went berserk with cheers and
applause as Graham walked onto the set. He was dressed in his concert clothes.
Instead of the torn jeans and T-shirts sported by most rock stars, Graham had
chosen a different style-he wore an exquisitely-tailored Italian black tuxedo, a
French silk white tuxedo shirt, and red Italian patent leather shoes. With his
long, wavy brown hair and chiseled features, Graham looked fabulous.
"Nice uni," Sam said approvingly, shaking her head up and down so that her long
red hair moved sexily, "I wouldn't kick him out of my-" "Sam!" Carrie hissed,
indicating the Templeton kids with her eyes. "Just watch the show, okay?"
"Sure," Sam said, in mock-chagrin. "You got it." "It's Daddy!" Chloe yelled
