them. Carrie's parents had probably just gotten home from the pediatrics
practice they ran together in Englewood, New Jersey.
"Oh, hi, darling! Hold on just a sec-" Carrie could hear her mother call out to
her father. "Tom! It's Carrie! Come on!" Then Carrie heard her dad pick up the
other extension.
"Carrie? Hi, honey!" her dad said.
Carrie smiled at hearing her dad's voice. "Hey, I got your message," Carrie
said. "Youwant to come up for the weekend? That's really great!" "We got Dr.
Thompson and his crew to cover our office through Monday night," her mother
said. "So I thought we'd come up tomorrow morning. That is, if that's okay with
you." "Fine!" Carrie said. Well, so much for a romantic weekend with Billy, she
thought for a brief second. Okay, ru work it in. I won't spend every waking
moment with my parents anyway.
"Great!" her father said. "I called the Sunset Inn and they've got room for us.
I'll just make a reservation through Monday night. We can't wait to see you!" "I
can't wait either," Carrie said. "And you'll finally get to meet Sam and Emma-
I've been telling you about them forever!" "See you tomorrow!" her mother said.
"We'll call when we get in." Carrie and her parents said their goodbyes, and
Carrie hung up. She hadn't made it more than twenty feet back to the family
room, where Chloe was coloring in a Disney coloring book and Ian was busy
playing Nmtendo, when the phone rang again.
Carrie went for it automatically. "Templeton residence, Carrie Alden speaking,"
she said.
"Hello, Carrie?" said a Spanish-accented voice, "It's Ray. How are you?"
"Raymond?! Wow, it's great to hear from you. What a surprise!" Carrie said
happily. Raymond Saliverez had been one of her best friends in high school, as
well as at Yale, where they both went to college. He was an exchange student
from the small South American island of Matalan and had -decided to stay on for
college in America. Carrie and Ray and her high school boyfriend, Josh, used to
hang out all the time. She and Ray had a platonic friendship that Carrie really
valued. Ray had been planning to spend the summer back on Matalan with his
family, which was why Carrie was so surprised to hear from him.
"Are you calling me from Matalan?" Carrie asked.
"No, I ended up staying in New Haven forthe summer," Ray replied. "Student
services got me a summer job as a Spanish tutor." "But I remember how much you
wanted to go home for a few months," Carrie said.
"Well, I have to go back in two weeks anyway when my visa expires," Ray said.
"Yeah, that's right," Carrie said, "I remember you told me you have to get it
renewed, right?" "Right," Ray replied. But there was a strange edge to his
voice.
"Ray, is everything okay?" Carrie asked.
"I thought perhaps I could come visit you this weekend," Ray said, and Carrie
noticed that he didn't answer her question about whether or not everything was
okay.
Carrie did some quick thinking. My parents are coming. But they know Ray and
they love him. They won't mind. I haven't seen Billy in a few days, but I can
still work that in. That's no problem with Ray. There's work, but I've kicked my
butt with work for the last week. Claudia and Graham will give me some extra
time off "I think it's a great idea!" Carrie said quickly. "I'd love to see
you-you can come and hang with me and my friends. I'd love for them to meet you.
