saw Encizo's black neoprene-hooded head, black-
smeared face and the short black bow of the Barnett

break the surface, he half turned, the pistol grip of his
AKS-74 in his fist. For an instant, he squinted against
the floodlights' glare. Was he looking at a tangled
mass of oily debris? Or was it a threat? The shock of
realization sent adrenaline coursing through his veins,
but it was too late.
Before the hardman could bring his shoulder-slung
assault rifle to bear, the crossbow thwanged, salt mist
spraying from its bowstring. The sixteen-inch metal
bolt covered the distance in a tenth of a second. Its
modified broad-head point sliced into the middle of
the Chechen's throat an inch above the top edge of
his body armor. Because of the relative positions of
the bowman and target, the bolt's entry angle was
steeply upward. Four razor-sharp blades transected
the Chechen's windpipe and larynx, and the point of
the broad-head buried itself into the front of the ver-
tebra that supported the base of his skull.
The soldier staggered back a step, hunching his
shoulders and gagging. He released the autorifle, let-
ting it drop on its sling, and clawed for the fletched
end of the bolt shaft protruding from his throat. A
second passed, then the shaft came away in his fist as
the explosive-tipped broad-head detonated with a
muffled cough. A tiny pop that turned a maybe into
a sure kill.
For the briefest instant, hot explosive gases bal-
looned the flesh of the Chechen's neck and face, mak-
ing his eyes bulge enormously. The small, shaped
charge neatly separated his skull from the knobby col-
umn of his spine. The quartet of surgical steel razors
fractured away from the broad-head's core, blowing
ragged rents in the sides of his neck. The soidier's
knees buckled, and his eyes became twin blood-laced

zeros. As he rolled down the grade to the edge of the
water, his semidetached head flopped through nearly
360 degrees of are.
Encizo rose from the water and quickly recocked
and rebolted his weapon with another of the minifrag
broad-heads designed by Gary Manning and Stony
Man Farm's armorer, John "Cowboy" Kissinger, for
perimeter penetration.
Calvin James surfaced on the other side of Zodiac.
