Kurtzman suddenly quit typing. He sat back in his
wheelchair, then reached forward and tapped one
more button. The large wall screen behind Able
Team lit up. Lyons and Blancanales swiveled in their
chairs to face the screen. Schwarz spun Buchanan
that way, then joined them.
"Where...the hell am IT' Buchanan slurred qui-
etly. He closed his eyes, then opened them again.
"Item one," Brognola said as the screen focused
on a subway station filled with Oriental men and
women hurrying toward the trains. "The Tokyo sub-
way." Suddenly an explosion sounded on screen,
and a cloud of fumes began to fill the subway station.
The cameraman taping the events switched angles to
focus on an abandoned suitcase against a wall. The
top of the suitcase had blown off, and clouds of gas
streamed from a metal canister that had been con-
cealed inside.

The sound of the explosion had stopped the crowd
in its tracks, but that lasted only a moment. The men
and women of the Tokyo subway system were all
too familiar with what was happening. Panic took
over. The fast-paced walks became death sprints for
the exits. Screams and curses rose from terrified
mouths. Those who stumbled, fell, and those who fell
were trampled.
Then the screen went black.
Brognola turned to the men at the table. "The Fol-
lowers of the Truth cult, thought to be inspired by
the Aum Shinrikyo, whose leader was arrested back
in 1995 after his devotees released nerve gas in the
subway. This tape was mailed to all the Tokyo tele-
vision stations and newspapers. The Followers of the
Truth set a new record this time--261 killed and an
additional two thousand with lung injuries." He nod-
ded to Kurtzman again.
The computer genius typed more. The screen
changed to show well-known TV anchorman Augus-
tus Garvey seated behind a news desk and wearing
a dark brown suit. "The Washington Chieftain re-
ported today," Garvey said, frowning into the cam-
era, "that a number of classified U.S. documents has
been discovered abandoned by the United Nations in
Somalia." The scene switched from Garvey to show
UN peacekeepers carrying boxes toward waiting
transport trucks.
