David smiled. "Touchщ."

"СGТ stands for Gate, as in the Gate between universes. We call this
division the Gate project. Over in number Two, they use the same names."

"Two?"

"Sorry. Universe Two, thatТs what we call it. After all, weТre Universe
One."

"I suppose they call themselves One and us Two," David said, a hint of
sarcasm in his voice.

"No," Kristin said, apparently missing his tone. "Alpha and Beta. WeТre
Beta."

"Um."

During the rest of the drive, David managed to make small talk with
Kristin. Mostly, they talked about physics and funding, keeping the
conversation on a professional level.

One thing they specifically did not talk about was parallel universes.
David still couldnТt believe she was serious. He kept thinking that this
had to be a joke of some sort. And yet, they had paid to fly him down to
Waxahachie, and Kristin seemed very serious about the whole thing. If this
was a joke, it certainly was a very expensive one.

And if it wasnТt . . .

David surmised heТd find out soon enough. Might as well enjoy the ride.

Just as Kristin had said, they arrived at Building G within half an hour.

"DoesnТt look like a G," David said after they got out of the car. In fact,
it was a squat cubical building.

"Did you expect it to?" Kristin asked.

They entered the small cubical building through a pair of glass doors.
David was hit by a blast of refreshing cool air, a nice contrast from the
dry heat of the late afternoon. It was even more comfortable here than it
had been in KristinТs office.

He followed Kristin down a few winding white-walled corridors, until they
came to a nondescript door with a metal handle. "This is it," she said. She
removed a passkey card from her purse.
