Freshman02 - Freshman Lies - Cooney, Linda A.

One.
He wore a University of Springfield parka that flapped open as he jogged through the spongy rain. He lunged into KC's path, his knit cap tumbling, exposing silky blond hair. Catching the hat as if it were a hard line drive, he looked to KC for appreciation.
"Don't I know you from somewhere?" he asked. KC had never seen the guy before. They were heading past the dining commons, which smelled warm and salty. He carried an umbrella and a university-bookstore bag. KC stared straight ahead and kept on walking. "Do I know you from Denver?" "No."
"Summer camp?"
"I doubt it."
"Reform school?"
"Very funny."
"I wouldn't forget a girl who looks like you." He leered. "Where are you going?"
"To meet my girlfriends," she snapped. "Buzz off."
He hurried to keep up with her. "What a coincidence. My name is Buzz."
"Buzz?" KC gave him an icy smile. "Is that a name?"
He whipped out his student ID. "My last name isn't Off, though."
"Too bad."
"What's your name?"
KC wasn't about to admit that her hippie parents had named her Kahia Cayanne.
"Okay, don't tell me. What dorm are you in?"
She didn't tell him she lived alone in an all-girls study dorm, either.
"What's your major?"
KC strode faster.
"You're the quiet type, aren't you?" He stepped up his pace to keep up with her. "I met you last week, during freshman orientation. I'm sure of it."
"I don't think so."
"The toga party?"
"I didn't go."
He looked her up and down, taking in her long, dark curls and her gray eyes, her briefcase, blazer, and knife-pleated skirt. "Oh. I get it. Sorority type. You were rushing with the geeks."
KC flinched. "The Greeks."
"That's what I said. The geeks."
"Ha ha."
"So what sorority house did you get into? And more important, do you still date poor, lonely dorm dudes who think you're gorgeous?" He put a hand to his heart and pretended to grovel.
KC glared.
"Are you reserved for frat brats?"
"I'm not reserved for anyone."
"So what house did you get into?"
KC's rage began to swell.
"Come on."
"Leave me alone!"
"You can tell me. Come on. Which house?"
Suddenly KC spun around and yelled in Buzz's face, "For your information, I'm not in any sorority. I'm a business major and Fve never been to Denver, and I'm not interested in dating anybody! So buzz off, Buzz!"
"Hey, okay." Buzz backed away. "I just asked. You can't blame a guy for trying." He finally hung back and let her go.
"Guys," KC grumbled, breaking into a run and heading for Faith's dorm.
All KC needed was some guy hassling her about sororities and rush. Guys had caused plenty of trouble the week before for her old friends, Faith Crowley and Winnie Gottlieb. One guy had caused horrible trouble for Faith's roommate, Lauren. And the last thing KC needed was some guy causing trouble for her.
"It's KC Angeletti going out for a pass!"
"Winnie, do we have to play this?" KC grumbled.
"Grab it, KC! It's coming right at you," Faith yelled.
"See, Faith agrees. Flip a Frisbee. Classes start tomorrow. This is our last night to goof around without guilt."
It was almost dinnertime. Light was slipping away, and the snap of fall was in the air. KC had let Winnie talk her and Faith into a game of Frisbee on the soggy dorm green. The drizzle had stopped, but there were gooey puddles on the walkways and the grass.
Winnie threw the Frisbee at KC again and resumed her commentary. "Angeletti leaps. She runs. She's going, going ..."
"Heads up, KC!" Faith cried out.
KC just stood there as the Frisbee drifted back, then
