He worked for BBC TV in London for seven years, mostly as a producer on the Nationwide programme, before taking charge of the Current Affairs department for BBC TV in Northern Ireland. In 1978 he became editor of Thames Television's Thames at Six. It was the Hornblower novels by C. S. Forester that first interested Bernard Cornwell in the Napoleonic Wars, an interest he has pursued since his schooldays. In his spare time from television he did research for the Richard Sharpe novels, of which Sharpe's Company is the third. Married to an American, he now lives in Devon.
