John looked at her with a trace of concern, sensing something was up. Jonah
stopped sipping his coffee and leaned back, looking to be in an expansive mood.
УWhat would that be, my dear?Ф
УSpider-Man.Ф
УArrhhhh!Ф Jameson moaned, and put the coffee down. УWhile I was eating, you
brought him up?Ф
УSpider-ManТs kind of a sore subject as far as my dad is concerned,Ф John said,
obviously hoping Mary Jane would drop it.
But she had no intention of doing so. УWell, I was just curious, thatТs all.
IТve seen all the articles, the editorials. And I was just wondering, yТknow,
what he ever did to you.Ф
УWhat makes you think he ever did anything to me?Ф
УWell, you write about him so muchЕФ
УHe sells newspapers, Mary Jane,Ф Jameson told her. УThatТs the single and sole
reason heТs occupied as many column inches as he has.Ф
УButЕ the slantЕ your editorialsЕФ
УI call them as I see them.Ф
УI justЕ I guess I wonder why you see it that way.Ф Mary Jane saw that John was
making throat-cutting gestures, mutely pleading with her to end the discussion.
УBut if you donТt want to talk about it, I understanЧФ
УMary Jane,Ф said Jameson, Уyou can search high and low for the rest of your
days, and you will never, ever find a topic I donТt want to talk about. You see
that son of mine?Ф and he pointed at John, УheТs a hero. A real hero.Ф
УDad, IТm just a guy doing a job.Ф
УYouТre a hero,Ф Jonah said firmly. УPolicemen, firemen, theyТre heroes. Men who
follow the president around day after day, ready to take a bullet for him,
theyТre heroes. And you know why, Mary Jane? Because they lay itЕ onЕ theЕ lineЕ
Ф He thumped his forefinger on the table with each word for emphasis. УAnd my
reporters? They lay it on the line. So do I. Every time we go after crooks or
double-dealers or power-mad politicians in theDaily Bugle, the name of the
person or persons who wrote the piece is right there, in black and white. You
know what thatТs called?Ф
УThe byline?Ф
УNo. Well, yes, but no, what I meant was, itТs called Сpersonal responsibility.Т
Taking responsibility for your actions and standing up for what you do.
Spider-Man doesnТt do that.Ф
УHe doesnТt?Ф she asked, wide-eyed.
УNo. HeТs no different than these idiots who creep around on the Internet,
writing vicious attacks and then hiding behind fake names.Ф
УWell, I think heТs alittle different,Ф Mary Jane pointed out. УI doubt a lot of
those Internet guys go swinging around Manhattan on webs.Ф
УThe principleТs the same. The fact is that he goes around doing whatever he
wants, wherever and whenever he wantsЧgetting himself involved in situations
best left to trained professionals such as policemen or firemenЧand hides from
any mistakes he might make in doing so behind a red mask! The way society
manages to survive is through checks and balances. Policemen, for instance, are
answerable to boards of review, internal affairs, systems set up to make sure
they donТt abuse their power. You know why? Because as Chairman Mao said, power
corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.Ф
УActually, it was Lord Acton,Ф Mary Jane delicately corrected him, Уand what he
