"Samuel R. Delany - The Fall Of The Towers 3 - City Of A Thousand Suns" - читать интересную книгу автора (Delaney Samuel R)

The twin sun shone on the white sand of the City.

тАЬWhen will the agents from Earth arrive?тАЭ someone asked.
As soon as they have found their three documents, the triple voice saidтАж and if they are still alive.

An ozone-scented breeze shifted the powdery whiteness down the side of a dune so that the subtle shape
of the desert was changed again, and the only thing stable and isolate was the City.

Near the centre of Toron an old merchant sat on his tiled balcony, gazing at the palace towers, then
down to the clapboard houses in the waterfront area of the DevilтАЩs Pot. тАЬClea?тАЭ he said.

тАЬYes, Dad.тАЭ

тАЬAre you sure this is what you want? YouтАЩve had every possible honour Toromon could offer you as a
scientist, for your work in matter-transmission, your theoretical studies. I donтАЩt think IтАЩve ever said it
directly to you. But IтАЩm very proud.тАЭ

тАЬThanks, Dad,тАЭ she said. тАЬBut itтАЩs what I want. Neither Rolth nor I intend to stop working. I have my
Unified Field Theory to complete. He will be working on a new historical project.тАЭ

тАЬWell, donтАЩt stand there. Call him out here.тАЭ

She walked back, into the house, then emerged a moment later, hand in hand with a tall man. They
stopped before the marble table at which Koshar sat. тАЬRolth Catham, you wish to marry my daughter,
Clea Koshar?тАЭ

тАЬYes.тАЭ The answer was firm.

тАЬWhy?тАЭ And response was quick.

Catham turned his head slightly, and the light glinted on the transparent plastic case of his cheek. The
fraction of his face that was mobile flesh smiled, and under it the direct gaze of Koshar wavered. тАЬThatтАЩs
not a fair question,тАЭ Koshar said, тАЬis it. I donтАЩt know. Since thatтАж second when we allтАж well, you
know. Then, I guess a lot of people have been saying things, asking things, and even answering things that
they wouldnтАЩt ordinarily.тАЭ

The embarrassment, Clea thought. Why must they all speak of that blind moment of telepathic contact
that had blanketed the empire that second at the end of the warтАФwith embarrassment. She had hoped
that her father would be different. It wasnтАЩt embarrassment at what had been seen, but at the newness of
the experience.

тАЬ тАШWhy?тАЩ is never an unfair question,тАЭ Catham said. тАЬItтАЩs partly because of what we saw at that
moment.тАЭ

Catham spoke of it without fear. That was one of the reasons she loved him now.

тАЬBecause weтАЩd known each otherтАЩs work. And because during that moment we knew each otherтАЩs mind.
