He took her hands with pleasure, enjoying their smooth warmth.
тАЬOooh,тАЭ he said and winced. тАЬThat bad, huh? WeтАЩd better spring you from this place PDQ,
then. I wouldnтАЩt want you that sane.тАЭ
Raeder watched as a weariness came over her and took the sparkle from her eyes. Though
she still smiled and stood proudly erect he could see it was an effort.
тАЬSo,тАЭ she asked, elaborately casual, тАЬwhat brings you to Camp Stick тАЩEm Together
Again?тАЭ
тАЬYour doctor. She wanted to talk to me, presumably about you. But now that you mention
it . . .тАЭ
Sarah grinned. тАЬItтАЩs good to see you, Peter. Let me show you around.тАЭ
Peter glanced around them, looking a bit furtive.
тАЬUm . . . The good doctor wanted to talk to me before I saw you,тАЭ he said. тАЬMaybe we
could go somewhere private and you can fill me in on your adventures in psychiatry.тАЭ
тАЬHow about here?тАЭ She sat down on the grass, long tanned legs out before her.
Peter looked around. They were in a little fold in the path, surrounded by foliage. No one
was visible and there were no sounds that indicated people were nearby. So he followed suit
and they sat awhile in silence until he began to feel awkward.
тАЬItтАЩs beautiful here,тАЭ he said at last.
тАЬUmm.тАЭ Sarah shook back her hair and closed her eyes as the breeze caressed her face. тАЬIt
is that. IтАЩd love to vacation here someday.тАЭ Then she turned to look at Peter. тАЬBut right now
IтАЩd like to leave.тАЭ
тАЬThe doctor disagrees?тАЭ
тАЬShe does.тАЭ Sarah grimaced and shook her head. тАЬI honestly donтАЩt understand what else
she thinks she can do for me. I want to work, I want to contribute. IтАЩve always been like that,
but she thinks itтАЩs some sort of manifestation of guilt. IтАЩm willing to concede that in some
small way there might be a little truth in that. What I donтАЩt understand is, what good is it
going to do anybody, especially me, keeping me here bored out of my skull and frustrated? I
know I could be useful on the Invincible, and I sure as hell donтАЩt want to lose my berth on
her.тАЭ She turned to Raeder. тАЬThink you can help me?тАЭ
тАЬWell, I was gonna tell her what a wild woman you were, and that youтАЩd managed to keep
it out of your official record through a combination of blackmail and bribery. But I guess I
could tell her the truth instead.тАЭ
She punched him in the arm, then laughed.
Raeder looked serious. тАЬViolent behavior and inappropriate laughing. What would the
good doctor say about this?тАЭ
SarahтАЩs mouth and eyes widened in dismay and she gasped.
тАЬWhoa,тАЭ he said, frowning. тАЬYouтАЩre really worried, here, arenтАЩt you?тАЭ
Her shoulders slumped, then she shrugged.
тАЬItтАЩs just that itтАЩs all so subjective,тАЭ she said in near despair. тАЬIтАЩm not well until Pianca
clears me, no matter how I feel about it. And frankly she seems to me to be dragging her
feet.тАЭ Flopping back on the grass she grumbled, тАЬSheтАЩs one of the owners of this place,
yтАЩknow. Maybe sheтАЩs trying to keep it full for the government pay.тАЭ
тАЬShe mentioned that the Commonwealth was paying a good rent.тАЭ
тАЬThe government also pays a pretty penny per patient as well,тАЭ Sarah told him. Then she
sat up, waving her hands as though to erase what sheтАЩd just been saying. тАЬPiancaтАЩs a good
doctor! She really has helped me and IтАЩm grateful. I just feel sheтАЩs holding on a little longer
than she needs to.тАЭ
тАЬIтАЩll do what I can,тАЭ Raeder promised.
Sarah smiled, her eyes warm. тАЬI know you will.тАЭ
At that moment RaederтАЩs stomach expressed itself loudly and they both laughed.
