him no more than an upward glance, then turned his attention straight back to the food.

Kit smiled slightly and picked up the phone. His sister was saying, тАЬAnd so then I told himтАФ Oh,
finally. Kit, donтАЩt hog the line; IтАЩm expecting a call. Why canтАЩt you two just do the magic telepathy thing
like you do with Nita? ItтАЩd be cheaper!тАЭ

тАЬVamos,тАЭ Kit said, trying not to sound too severe.

тАЬBye, sweetie,тАЭ Tom Swale said on the other end.

тАЬBye-bye, Mr. Tom,тАЭ Carmela said, and hung up the upstairs phone.

Kit grinned. тАЬтАШMagic telepathy,тАЩтАЭ he said. тАЬLike she cares that much about the phone bill.тАЭ

Tom laughed. тАЬExplaining the differences of communications between you and me and you and Nita
might make more trouble than itтАЩs worth,тАЭ he said. тАЬBetter let her get away with it just this once. Am I
interrupting anything?тАЭ

тАЬI just finished dealing with a hardware conflict,тАЭ Kit said, тАЬbut itтАЩs handled now, I think. WhatтАЩs up?тАЭ

тАЬI wouldnтАЩt mind a consultation, if you have the time.тАЭ

He wants a consultation from me? ThatтАЩs a new one. тАЬSure,тАЭ Kit said. тАЬNo problem. I'll be right over.тАЭ

Kit hung up, and saw the look his mother was giving him. тАЬWhenтАЩs it going to be ready, Mama?тАЭ he
said. тАЬI wonтАЩt be late. Not too late, anyway.тАЭ
