happens in Maag all the time.тАЩ
тАШIt goes a long way past тАЬsquabbleтАЭ, Hook-Beak,тАЩ she said. тАШThe
people of Dhrall dwell mostly along the coastline where the fishingтАЩs
good, but there are other creatures who dwell in the Wastelands of the
interior. TheyтАЩre starting to grow restless, and we want you and your
warriors to persuade them to go back home where they belong. ThatтАЩs
why I sent for you. I want you to enlist your fellow Maags to come here
and help us drive the creatures of the Wasteland back across the
mountains. WeтАЩll tell the Maags that IтАЩll give them gold if they come here
and help us.тАЩ
тАШItтАЩs easy to say gold, Lady Zelana,тАЩ Sorgan said, тАШbut I think IтАЩll need
to see gold before IтАЩll be very convincing when I talk with the other
Maags.тАЩ
тАШThat sounds reasonable.тАЩ Zelana turned to the little girl. тАШTake him
back to where the gold is, Eleria,тАЩ she said. тАШLet him see how much there
is.тАЩ
тАШOf course, Beloved,тАЩ the little girl replied. тАШItтАЩs back in the cave a
ways, Hook-Big,тАЩ she told Sorgan.
тАШThatтАЩs тАЬHook-BeakтАЭ,тАЩ he corrected her.
тАШAh,тАЩ she said. тАШThat does make a little more sense, doesnтАЩt it? I must
have misunderstood the Beloved when she told me your name. It seemed
to me that it was backward, but тАШBig-HookтАЩ wouldnтАЩt make sense either,
would it? How much of this gold did you want to look at?тАЩ
тАШAs much as possible,тАЩ Sorgan replied eagerly.
тАШI donтАЩt think we have that much time,тАЩ Eleria said. тАШThe BelovedтАЩs in
sort of a hurry.тАЩ
Then the gauze-draped Zelana made a kind of squeaking sound, and
Eleria responded in the same fashion. Sorgan gathered that it must have
been some sort of foreign language.
Then Zelana reached out and took a glowing lump of fire out of the
empty air and handed it to Eleria. тАШItтАЩs dark back in the cave,тАЩ Eleria told
Sorgan. тАШThis little sun will light our way. You should feel honored,
Hook-Beak. The Beloved was going to have this for lunch.тАЩ She held out
the glowing lump of fire. тАШHere,тАЩ she said. тАШYou can carry it, if you like.тАЩ
Sorgan put his hands behind his back. тАШNo, thatтАЩs all right,тАЩ he said,
perhaps a bit too quickly. тАШYou can carry it.тАЩ So far as Sorgan was able to
determine, the lump was not enclosed in glass - or anything else, for that
matter. It appeared to be raw fire, but the little girl seemed very casual
about the whole thing.
тАШAll right. Come along, then.тАЩ She led him back into the cave, holding
up the fire to light the way.
тАШDoesnтАЩt that burn your hand?тАЩ Sorgan asked Eleria as they went back
into the rocky passageway.
тАШNo,тАЩ she replied. тАШThe Beloved asked it not to.тАЩ
тАШWhy do you keep calling her тАЬthe BelovedтАЭ?тАЩ he asked curiously.
тАШThatтАЩs what the pink dolphins call her,тАЩ Eleria replied. тАШI used to play
with the pink dolphins when I was younger.тАЩ
тАШWe saw some of those when we were coming here from LongbowтАЩs
village,тАЩ he said.
тАШI know. The Beloved asked them to show you the way. She didnтАЩt
