the life of this child. Join with your son, Mithra, and purge the fever from her body. Give me a sign that she will live so
that I may comfort my King.тАЩ
тАШWhere am I?тАЩ came the little voice as if in answer to his prayer.
тАШIt is a sign from god,тАЩ he said in a whisper. He bent down to the girl who shrank away from him. тАШRelax, child. I will
not harm you. I am Haman of the Magi.тАЩ
тАШWhere am I?тАЩ she repeated.
тАШYou are in the camp of the great Persian King, Khshayarsha.тАЩ
She looked around frantically. тАШWhere is the giant?тАЩ
тАШGiant?тАЩ He paused and then smiled and held up his hand. тАШWait!тАЩ
Haman disappeared and the girl looked around at the beautiful furnishings of the tent. Wrapping the blanket
around herself, she slipped her feet to the floor and walked round the tent, touching the furs and skins hanging from
its roof. A movement made her turn.
тАШYou well?тАЩ asked Hegai, standing in the doorway of the tent.
She smiled and nodded. тАШI saw you in the river. You saved my life.тАЩ
Hegai shrugged. тАШIs nothing. You wish eat?тАЩ
Hadasseh nodded and the giant held out his hand to her which she took without hesitation.
The sun was low in the sky as they stepped out of the tent together and she looked around at the remnants of the
overnight camp. There were several dozen tents and a battalion of soldiers left to guard them. The soldiers shifted
to make room for them both at the campfire as they sat and began to eat from a basket of fruit and bread which had
been prepared. They watched as the girl tucked in to the food as if she hadnтАЩt eaten for a week. Suddenly, she
noticed that they were all watching her closely and grew afraid, shuffling close to Hegai for protection. The men
laughed.
тАШYou not be afraid, little one,тАЩ laughed Hegai. тАШThey not see child eat so much before.тАЩ
She looked wary for a moment until the men started to continue their conversations.
тАШThey the Immortals,тАЩ Hegai continued. тАШBest of KingтАЩs troops. When they are in battle, they a sight to see as they
advance over hill and valley and nothing stop them.тАЩ
тАШWhy are they here?тАЩ
тАШThey escort new King from his place of coronation at Pasargadae to Shushan where he to rule as King. Tell me,
why you here?тАЩ
She looked down. тАШMy father was to serve the King at Shushan.тАЩ
тАШYou know people at city?тАЩ
She nodded. тАШMy fatherтАЩs brother, Jair, was taken there along with the Holy Prophet, Daniel. His son, Mordecai, is
there now.тАЩ
тАШMordecai?тАЩ Hegai turned to the guards. тАШYou men hear of man, Mordecai, in city?тАЩ
The soldiers looked at each other and then shook their heads. Suddenly, one had inspiration. тАШThere is a
gatekeeper of the palace called Marduka. Could that be him?тАЩ
Hegai looked at the girl who shrugged. тАШI have never met my cousin. My father was to make all the arrangements.тАЩ
Hegai slipped his arm around her shoulders. тАШWho was it who hurt parents?тАЩ
She shuddered and shook her head, tears appearing in her eyes. тАШI donтАЩt know. It was very dark.тАЩ
тАШYou recognise again?тАЩ
тАШPossibly. I donтАЩt know.тАЩ
тАШYou remember names?тАЩ
тАШNo. They did say names but they were all strange to me.тАЩ Her eyes lit up. тАШOne was called Arisai, or something
like it.тАЩ
тАШArisai? I know an Arimi, could that be it?тАЩ
She shook her head. тАШI donтАЩt think so. It was all strange and I was very frightened. Father made me hide in the
water barrel until I could get away. Then I... I fell over the cliff into the river.тАЩ
тАШI sorry. Not want to remind of death.тАЩ
The girl placed her small hand upon that of the giant. тАШWhat is your name?тАЩ
He proudly thumped his chest with his fist. тАШI, Hegai of Parthia.тАЩ
