Many things can happen in the time it takes to write a book. For
example, when I began this one, the Columbia Library School was still
open and the underground sections of the World Trade Center were still
intact. If I had to try to revise these sections to reflect the Real
World of Now, this book would have been set somewhere else.

And so I beg your readerly indulgence. The heart has its raisins which
the kumquats know not of, as the French don't say.
