"I didn't say I couldn't do it. I just said I didn't see any real
need to go traveling into the future."

Gail hooted. "Can't you even listen? I didn't say futureтАФI said
past. Nobody can travel into the future because it hasn't
happened yet."

"Then all you do is visit the past? You stay there?"

"That's right."

"Forever."

"Well, at least until you retire."

"And when is that?"

"Oh, when you're seventy, eighty, no one rushes you. We've
still got squad leaders hi the field who were with the original
corps."

This made up Jan's mind for him. He said firmly, "Not me."

Gail seemed more genuinely disturbed than ever before. "You
can't mean that. Just think of the possibilities : the Roman
Empire, Egypt of the Pharaohs, the court of Kublai Khan, Inca
Cuzo, Byzantine Constantinople, the London of Dickens, frontier
America.

Anywhere and anywhen you desire. What more could you ever
want?"

"There's only one place I want to be," Jan said. "That's the
Jarman Homestead in the year 2169."

Her expression radiated a deep contempt. "In other words,
you want to quit the corps."

"I want to go home."

"Same thing. So I may as well tell you. Whitlow said I might
have to but I didn't believe anybody could be that dumb. Well, I
was wrong. You know what happens to quitters here? Have you
