The paperback edition of this novel, which was first published in hardback in 1979, has been brought forward at rather short notice, and there has been no opportunity to update background political events. So there is no mention of Afghanistan, or Poland, or of the accelerated expansion of the Soviet fleet and weaponry, or - perhaps more importantly - of the disastrous and I believe inexcusable new cuts in the strength of the Royal Navy. The story should therefore be read in the context of 1979, please, not of 1982. A. F.
