Their eyes locked, then her image blipped out. Kirk blew out a breath.
The Chancellor of the Klingon High Council wanted him to accept an honor
debt. Well, that was something you didn't see every day. He
congratulated himself for getting off so easily.

His door chimed. "Come in," he called, rubbing his eyes.

There was a slight hiss and Skalli stood in the doorway.

"It's nineteen hundred hours and five minutes," she said. "We're all
waiting for you, and we're hungry!"

Kirk regarded her for a moment, then rose. "Far be it from me to keep a
roomful of hungry cadets waiting," he said. "After you."

Azetbur stared at the dark screen after the image of Kirk had
disappeared, playing a little game with herself. She wanted to see how
long it would take before her right hand, Brigadier Kerla, exploded in
fury.

"Arrogant human pahtk!" Kerla spat. Azetbur permitted herself a slight
smile.

"It took you three entire seconds," she said calmly. "I am pleased to
see you are learning restraint. It will serve us well in our interaction
with humans."

"He spurned the DIS jaj je!" raged Kerla, stamping about the small room,
ignoring Azetbur's gibe. "That pompous, self centered--"

"Patience, my old friend," Azetbur soothed. "He is only a human, after
all. He does not know our customs. He could not possibly understand the
honor I offered him." She rose.

"Besides, he did not spurn it."

"With all due respect, Chancellor," said Kerla, "I was by your side the
entire time. I heard what he--"

"He may have meant to decline the offer of the honor debt," replied
Azetbur, choosing her words very carefully. "But one cannot decline such
