тАЬYouтАЩre all right.тАЭ Jane realized she had never had to reassure
anyone before; there had always been someone else, someone
closer to do the comforting. тАЬReally. No head injury. And your arm
should be fine in a fewтАФтАЭ
тАЬIтАЩm pregnant.тАЭ
Jane did not have the faintest idea how to respond.
тАЬI found out for certain in Benque Viejo. Just over three
months gone.тАЭ Jane got up, dipped her a bowl of water from the
barrel by the door. тАЬThank you.тАЭ She looked up, met JaneтАЩs eyes.
тАЬArenтАЩt you going to ask me if itтАЩs good news?тАЭ
Cleis seemed thin and vulnerable, her eyes big, and Jane
wished she knew how to comfort her. тАЬIs it?тАЭ
Cleis nodded. тАЬIтАЩm forty-one. IтАЩve never loved anyone enough
to have a child with them. Last year I realized I probably never
would. So I decided to have one on my own. It took me ten
months of trying. I thought that wall coming downтАжтАЭ She was
crying again. This time Jane wiped away the tears with her hands.
тАЬYouтАЩre all right. YouтАЩre all right.тАЭ
тАЬIтАЩm sorry.тАЭ And Jane thought she might be apologizing for
more than the tears.
After a while, Cleis looked around at the smooth adobe walls,
the herbs hanging from the roof. тАЬWhereтАЩs Ixbalum?тАЭ
тАЬShe went out about two hours ago.тАЭ They had not exchanged
a single word. Jane had just watched while the Mayan woman
washed CleisтАЩs wounds, slathered them with an already prepared

Cleis pushed aside the glass of water and the pills that Jane
was holding out. тАЬI donтАЩt want them. Not yet. I donтАЩt know whatтАЩs
going on, but I donтАЩt like it.тАЭ She was flushed, sweaty. Jane
wondered if she had made a mistake encouraging Cleis to walk
back to their shack so soon. At least she was lying down now.
тАЬTake the pills. You have a fever, and your arm must hurt.тАЭ
тАЬOf course it hurts. Christ knows what crap she put on it.
How do I know my armтАЩs not rotting off?тАЭ
They had already been through this. тАЬI watched her wash it.
She seemed to know what she was doing.тАЭ She should have come
here and got the first-aid kit, proper antiseptics, antibiotic creams,
but she had been too drunk, too shaken up from the conversation
by the pool. And Ixbalum had been soтАж competent. She said,
again, тАЬI donтАЩt know what the salve was but it was freshтАФmoist,
green-smellingтАФand the bowl looked clean.тАЭ
тАЬBut why was it fresh? How did she know IтАЩd need it?тАЭ Cleis
was getting more and more fretful.
тАЬJust take these pills. Everything will seem better when youтАЩve
