Seven or eight of the physicists had gotten up to speak, discoursing
on this or that arcane area, making recommendations, complaining, fending
off GiorgioтАЩs staccato questions and comments. Finally, it was ElizabethтАЩs
turn. She took the low podium, hesitantly began to talk, showed several
prepared slides. Unfortu-nately, she could not quite conceptualize what was
bothering her, and when you could not quite conceptualize, Giorgio jumped
down your throat.

тАЬSo the photographs were fuzzy,тАЭ he rasped. тАЬSo what. Clean your
camera lenses.тАЭ

A chuckle rippled through the audience.

тАЬThey were clean, Giorgio. And the focus was checked.тАЭ

wooden ruler or a metal one?тАЭ

More laughter, much of it strained.

savagely patronizing now. тАЬElizabeth, we are talking about a six-cubic-meter
volume, subject to quite substantial forces here. Why are you surprised by
a minuscule movement? Why do you think itтАЩs important? Have you
checked the magnetic field servos? Have you checked the uncertainties in
the energy budgets?тАЭ
