Concerning the Online Romance of Three Kingdoms

Ѓ What are your goals in publishing Romance of Three Kingdoms online?

Our foremost goal is to make this masterpiece available for the enjoyment of readers around the world. For five hundred years, Romance of Three Kingdoms has been the most beautiful novel in Asia. The Internet offers a good medium to share the book with millions other readers.

Ѓ Who are the people behind the online Romance of Three Kingdoms?

We are a group of fans who love the masterpiece. Please go to Preface 2 to see the acknowledgement. The web site has, in fact, received many contributions and suggestions from the readers like you. Please continue sending us your comments so that we can update the web site to your liking. Even if when we can not incorporate your ideas, we are still grateful for your good intention.

The chief coordinator of the web site is Khang Nguyen. He is the one who will receive your emails and reply to each of them in a prompt manner. The founder of threekingdoms.com, he can make all kinds of decisions, so talk to him if you need something.

ќ Can I make a mirror site of it?

No, you can not make a mirror site for threekingdoms.com. We want to keep the web site in once place for easy update; also, the copyright holders of this web site do not allow us to grant permission for another mirror site.

We host the web site with Geocities.com, a Yahoo!'s company, so that we will have all the bandwidth for Internet readers. It is very rare that Geocities servers are down; hence, the readers can freely access the book around the world 24 hours a day.

Ѓ I have downloaded the book to my computer's hard drive. Can I send the electronic copies of the book to my friends?

Yes, you surely can. We publish the zip files for your convenient download and exchange with each other. Many readers are from China, India, Malaysia, Brazil, Chile, Italy, Germany, etc., where Internet time is metered. They asked us some time ago for a zip file, and now we have it for them. We want to thank the copyright holders for allowing us to publish the zip format on the Internet. You can now download the book to your hard drive and give it to your friends. It is free!!!

Ѓ Can I use some materials in the book, that is a few paragraphs and some quotations, to build my non-commercial web site?

Of course, you can do that. We are glad to see more Three Kingdoms web sites. The book has 1,400 pages; you can quote 5 or 10 pages from the book, if you like.

Ѓ Will you publish a Chinese version of Romance of Three Kingdoms?

Various Chinese versions of Romance of Three Kingdoms have been published on the Internet, although some web sites only have fractions of the book. To locate the web sites, please go to the Links section and use the search engines. In paper, the novel is readily available to the readers in public and family libraries, bookstores, and schools. Therefore, we will not publish a Chinese version on our web site.

Ѓ Will you publish Romance of Three Kingdoms in other languages beside English?

No, we will not in the near future. Our resource is limited, and so publishing the book in several languages is beyond our means. However, as soon as we can, we will not hesitate to make the novel freely available to readers of other languages. Beside Asian languages, we wish to see the book in major languages such as Spanish, French, German, Russian, Arabic, etc.

Ѓ Will you publish other well-known novels, such as Dreams of the Red Mansion and Water Margin, in English?

We are only focused on Romance of Three Kingdoms right now. But in the far future, we may think of other novels.

Concerning the New Latin Names

Ѓ Why are all the weird English names in this Chinese masterpiece? Who are Jeffery-Lewis, Murphy-Shackley, Yale-Perez, etc.?

We chose the names from several cultures, and we called those names Latin names. Romance of Three Kingdoms has over two thousand Chinese names. Some readers find it a difficult read due to the unfamiliar names. Some readers find the Latin names can help their memories; hence, we incorporate the Latin names into the book to make their experience more enjoyable.

Jeffery-Lewis is Liu Bei, Murphy-Shackley is Cao Cao, Yale-Perez is Guan Yu, etc.

Ѓ Don't you think the Latin names are weird in a Chinese setting?

At first we did. We laughed quite a few times at the arrangement. But we got used to them by and by. We are now very comfortable with the Latin names and kind of think them cute.  =)

Ѓ Have any readers protested the new names?

Yes, they have, very frequently. Here are a few quotes:

     • "...Snow N. Snow is a stupid editor who would consider the silly American names for the characters in the book..."
» We answered: "...we believe your feeling can be valid..."

     • "...you have insulted our heroes; you have insulted the readers..."
» We answered: "...no hard feeling, but the characters in the book are our heroes too. We are fans of the novel, and we have no intention to insult anyone..."

     • "...I am lost for words; you might as well rename Romeo and Juliet as Dick Tracy and Lois Lane..."
     » We answered: "LOL"

     • "...No, no, no!!! You should change the names back, dude, to like Liu Bei, Guan Yu..."
» We answered: "...we hear ya. We are working for the Pinyin names..."

     • "...Sacrilege!!!..."
     » (: x)  we dared not answer.

Ѓ What do you feel about those protests?

We understand them, because we are Romance of Three Kingdoms fans. When we first published the book online in 1997, we used only Latin names. After two dozens of complaining emails, we published another version of the book with original Chinese names in Pinyin. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, and when they raise their voice, we will go the extra length to serve them if we can.

We at threekingdoms.com love to hear from you. Even when we receive complaints, we feel happy because you care and we can make a difference for you. We love to laugh here; but when we get emails with harsh language, we can feel the choke right away. Fortunately, we also get many praises and encouragements from the readers, and that really makes us feel that we are doing a great job for the novel and its readers---Thanks a lot to you kind hearts!!! Do not hesitate to send us your compliments as well as complaints, because those emails will give us directions.

Ѓ What can I do if I do not like the Latin names?

Read the online version that has Pinyin names. Click on the letter "P", which will lead you to that version.

Ѓ Will you create other sets of names for the masterpiece?

When we can, we will think of other sets of names for the novel. For example, a kid in a certain village in Peru will be able to read Romance of Three Kingdoms with the names familiar to the Quechua language.

Ѓ Are you serious? That is so cool!

You bet it is. The book deserves to be a pop icon throughout the world instead of a mere niche read outside Asia.

Concerning the Design of the Web Site

Ѓ Why doesn't your web site have many graphics?

For two reasons. One reason is that we want to minimize the time of downloading a chapter to your computer.

But a more important reason is that we do not have enough time to sit down together and think about what the characters should look like. In order to draw a good picture, a lot of thoughts are required. Look how beautiful the video game "Romance of Three Kingdoms" is. After six editions, it comes out extraordinary. Since we can not do accurate art works, we better stick to the traditional format of letters only. The book format is what makes the story famous. However, in the introduction pages, we include quite a few drawings from an old source that we think very beautiful. Just want to make you feel happy.

Ѓ Can I download the book to my computer's hard drive for convenient reading later on?

Yes, you can. We have the zip files for you to download. You only need to download one file, instead of 140+ HTML files. Choose the version of zip file that fit your computer. You can send the zip file to your friends too, so that they do not have to download the file again from the Internet.

Ѓ The computer screen hurts my eyes, when I read a long book like Romance of Three Kingdoms. What can I do?

You can set the background color of the book to black, and the font color to gray. Or you can choose other color themes that fit your liking. You will need an Internet browser that can run Javascript. Netscape Internet Navigator 4.0+ or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0+ will do it.

Ѓ I do not want to read the book, but want someone read it to me. What can I do?

You can use the audio feature. This is a cool idea, because you can relax and let the story teller read the book for you. In order to do this, you will need the followings:

          • An Internet browser that can run Visual Basic Script. Internet Explorer 4.0+ is the best choice.
          • Download and install the Microsoft Agent software from Microsoft.com.
          • Download and install the four animated characters.
          • Download and install the speech engine.

When your computer is connected to the Internet, if you choose the audio feature, the software will be download for you automatically. The total download is about 6 MB. All the download instructions can be found in the Download section.

Ѓ What can I do when I see a broken link or a typo or any problem in your web site?

Please report the problem to Khang Nguyen. He will have it fixed immediately. We appreciate your help a lot.

Miscellaneous

Ѓ I do not wish to read the novel on my computer. Do they have the novel in book?

Yes, they do. You can buy the books online. Please go to the Books section to see the information about Romance of Three Kingdoms products.

Ѓ Do you know where I can download the computer game of Romance of Three Kingdoms?

     No, we do not.

Ѓ Do you know where I can buy the computer or video games?

The Games and Links sections may give you useful information on this question.

Ѓ Do you know where I can buy the TV series "Romance of Three Kingdoms" filmed in China?

We have not seen it in store anywhere. But a few readers said they had the series in video tapes, which they recorded from the local broadcast.

Ѓ Is the book fit to read to children? It seems "extremely" violent by my standards.

Children can come to know the stories in Romance of Three Kingdoms when they are in elementary school. We see no danger at all. The book has been a sort of fairy tales to kids in Asia for five hundred years. The morals the book brings---bravery, honor, loyalty, virtue, public spirit, politics, and intellectual power---are more influential than the bloodsheds we see. The novel is no more violent than The Iliad of Homer. Romance of Three Kingdoms is a masterpiece, and it offers good values to any reader, even if that is a child. We personally read and discuss the book when we were little kids.

You can go to the Commentary section, where you will find a writing by Benjamin Li about the book. He wrote the article when he was thirteen years old. Another reader Yan Zhang, at eleven years of age, had read the book in both English and ancient Chinese.

One final note: The computer and video game "Romance of Three Kingdoms" is not rated as a fighting game, but it belongs to the strategy category; even so, the book itself is considered by some as a classic in martial arts.
