was there to envy about that?

The Captain said, тАЬSam, you've got no romance in your soul. You'll live and die running a ferry boat.тАЭ

тАЬMaybe so,тАЭ the co-pilot answered, тАЬbut I sleep home a lot of nights.тАЭ

The Captain said pilots should not marry. тАЬTake me,тАЭ he said, тАЬI always wanted to be a deep-space
man. I was all set for it, too, when I was captured by pirates and missed my chance. By the time I had
the chance again, I was married.тАЭ

тАЬYou and your pirates,тАЭ said the co-pilot.

I kept my face straight. Adults always think anybody younger will swallow anything; I try not to
disillusion them.

тАЬWell, all that's as may be,тАЭ said the Captain. тАЬYou two young gentlemen run along now. Mr. Mayes
and I have got to fake up a few figures, or we'll be landing this bucket in South Brooklyn.тАЭ

So we thanked him and left.

I found Dad and Molly and the Brat in the deck aft of my own. Dad said, тАЬWhere have you been, Bill?
I've been looking all over the ship for you.тАЭ

I told them, тАЬUp in the control room with the Captain.тАЭ

Dad looked surprised and the Brat made a face at me and said, тАЬSmarty, you have not. Nobody can go
up there.тАЭ

I think girls should be raised in the bottom of a deep, dark sack until they are old enough to know better.
Then when it came time, you could either let them out or close the sack and throw them away, whichever
was the best idea.

Molly said, тАЬHush, Peggy.тАЭ

I said, тАЬYou can just ask Hank. He was with me. WeтАФтАЭ I looked around but Hank was gone. So I told
them what had happened, all but the part about pirates.

When I finished the Brat said, тАЬI want to go into the control room, too.тАЭ

Dad said he didn't think it could be arranged. The Brat said, тАЬWhy not? Bill went.тАЭ

Molly said hush again. тАЬBill is a boy and older than you are.тАЭ The Brat said it wasn't fair.

I guess she had something thereтАФbut things hardly ever are. Dad went on, тАЬYou should feel flattered,
Bill, being entertained by the famous Captain DeLongPre.тАЭ
