Presently Art said in an odd tone of voice, тАЮMorrie-would it hurt anything to
wipe some of this blood away?тАЬ
тАЮYouтАЩre dern tootinтАЩ it would! You let him be till the doctor comes.тАЬ тАЮAll right,
all right. Anyhow I donтАЩt need toтАФIтАЩm sure anyhow. Morrie, I know who he is.тАЬ
тАЮYou do? Who?тАЬ
тАЮHeтАЩs my uncle.тАЬ
тАЮYour uncle!тАЬ
тАЮYes, my uncle. You know-the one IтАЩve told you about. HeтАЩs my Uncle Don.
Doctor Donald Cargraves, my тАЪAtomic BombтАЩ uncle.тАЬ
Chapter 2 :: A MAN-SIZED CHALLENGE

тАЮAT LEAST IтАЩM PRETTY SURE itтАЩs my uncle,тАЬ Art went on. тАЮI could tell for
certain if I could see his whole face.тАЬ
тАЮDonтАЩt you know whether or not heтАЩs your uncle? After all, a member of
your own family-тАЮ
тАЮNope. I havenтАЩt seen him since he came through here to see Mother, just
after the war. ThatтАЩs been a long time. I was just a kid then. But it looks like
him.тАЬ
тАЮBut he doesnтАЩt look old enough,тАЬ Morrie said judiciously. тАЮI should think-
Here comes the ambulance!тАЬ
It was indeed, with Ross riding with the driver to show him the road and the
driver cussing the fact that the road existed mostly in RossтАЩs imagination.
They were all too busy for a few minutes, worrying over the stranger as a
patient, to be much concerned with his identity as an individual. тАЮDoesnтАЩt look
too bad,тАЬ the interne who rode with the ambulance announced. тАЮNasty scalp
wound. Maybe concussion, maybe not. Now over with him- easy! -while I
hold his head.тАЬ When turned face up and lifted into the stretcher, the patientтАЩs
eyes flickered; he moaned and seemed to try to say something. The doctor
leaned over him.
Art caught MorrieтАЩs eye and pressed a thumb and forefinger together. There
was no longer any doubt as to the manтАЩs identity, now that Art had seen his
face.
Ross started to climb back in the ambulance but the interne waved him away.
тАЮBut all of you boys show up at the hospital. WeтАЩll have to make out an
accident report on this.тАЬ
As soon as the ambulance lumbered away Art told Ross about his discovery.
Ross looked startled. тАЮYour uncle, eh? Your own uncle. What was he doing
here?тАЬ
тАЮI donтАЩt know. I didnтАЩt know he was in town.тАЬ
тАЮSay, look- I hope heтАЩs not hurt bad, especially seeing as how heтАЩs your
uncleтАФbut is this the uncle, the one you were telling us about who has been
mentioned for the Nobel Prize?тАЬ
тАЮThatтАЩs what IтАЩve been trying to tell you. HeтАЩs my Uncle Donald Cargraves.тАЬ
тАЮDoctor Donald Cargraves!,тАЬ Ross whistled. тАЮJeepers! When we start
slugging people we certainly go after big game, donтАЩt we?тАЬ
тАЮItтАЩs no laughing matter. Suppose he dies? WhatтАЩll I tell my mother?тАЬ
тАЮI wasnтАЩt laughing. LetтАЩs get over to the hospital and find out how bad heтАЩs
hurt before you tell her anything. No use in worrying her unnecessarily.тАЬ Ross
sighed, тАЮI guess we might as well break the news to my folks. Then IтАЩll drive
