surrounded by the awful carnage. Their keening cries of grief drifted like the thin wails of
ghosts along a sheer cliffside.

on the villagers' faces, Liet knew his father was probably saying the wrong things, expressing his
sympathy in abstract concepts that they had no ability to understand.
