suit.тАЭ The Purple smiled again, that thin elegant smile. тАЬI have a similar
problem.тАЭ He swung his chair about abruptly, looking down at the grounds
as Amber made a sound. тАЬYouтАЩre going to be late. I suggest you hurry.тАЭ

тАЬIтАЩll do that.тАЭ Jack got to his feet. He saluted sharply. тАЬWith your
permission, sir.тАЭ

тАЬGo on. IтАЩll keep Amber up here with me, if you donтАЩt mind.тАЭ

Storm grinned. тАЬI have little to say about it. Just make sure she doesnтАЩt
mind.тАЭ He closed the observation office door on PurpleтАЩs dry chuckle,
feeling uneasy. He and the officer had discussed AmberтАЩs role in his life and
he didnтАЩt like leaving her alone with Purple. He shrugged. Amber could
handle herself.

Amber swung around to look at the silver-haired man who ran the
EmperorтАЩs personal guard. Jack felt a loyalty to this man, won fairly in
combat situations theyтАЩd seen as mercenaries against, and then with, one
another. She didnтАЩt feel the same loyalty. She kept her street wariness honed
like a fine blade. It helped her to survive.

She crossed her legs. тАЬI know this isnтАЩt social.тАЭ

тАЬNo. And it has nothing to do with todayтАЩs events, exactly. What
happened to Jack today didnтАЩt help any, but it clarified the situation a little.тАЭ

Amber felt a sudden chill across her bare arms. She chafed them in
response. тАЬWhat is it? I donтАЩt like what youтАЩve done to him. He has a whole
new mindset.тАЭ

тАЬItтАЩs you. Your relationship with Jack is a liability he canтАЩt afford if he
makes the Guard, and weтАЩll both be damn surprised if he doesnтАЩt. These last
weeks have been spent fine-tuning Jack back into what he used to beтАФan
unstoppable weapon that only needs to be pointed in the right direction. He
hasnтАЩt time to foster you.тАЭ

Amber gave a wry smile, one that never quite reached the coldness of
her golden brown eyes.

тАЬYou mean IтАЩm a chink in his battle armor, so to speak.тАЭ

The Purple smiled back. тАЬWell put. Yes. HeтАЩs going to have to ask you to
let him move on. ThereтАЩre separate quarters for the GuardтАж youтАЩll be left in
his old quarters, no problem there. And youтАЩll be provided for.тАЭ

She stopped rubbing her arms and simply held herself, bracing herself
for the impact of the commanderтАЩs words. She looked at him. тАЬSuppose I
donтАЩt want to be left alone.тАЭ
