"Replica02 - Pursuing Amy - Kaye, Marilyn" - читать интересную книгу автора (Kaye Marilyn) "I'm here to give Nancy a makeover," Monica announced, indicating the big cosmetics bag she was carrying. "Don't worry, I know how to put makeup on normal people. I won't make her look like me!"
And she didn't. The look she gave Nancy was fabulous Ч subtle, subdued, and just a little glamorous. Amy had never seen her mother's eyes look quite so big and bright Ч though that might have had nothing to do with the makeup. It could have been just the way she was feeling. "Let me see what you're wearing," Monica demanded. Nancy took out her new dark red dress; then Monica did her lips in a soft rose. "Mom, you look great!" Amy told her. "I'm getting out of here before Mr. Wonderful shows up," Monica announced, packing up her cosmetics. "Oh, Monica. Stop it," Nancy chided. "He's just a nice guy, that's all. And this is just a date." "You forget," Monica said dryly. "I've seen him. He was one of the best-looking men at the art gallery opening we went to last month." Monica was right. He was more than just a nice guy. Amy made that decision instantly when she opened the door to Brad Carrington. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with lots of wavy brown hair. And he was handsome. "You must be Amy," he said. "I must be," she repeated, and then realized how stupid she sounded. But Brad Carrington just grinned. Amy remembered her manners. "Please come in, Mr. Carrington." "Thank you," he said, and followed Amy into the living room. "But you know, I'd feel a whole lot better if you called me Brad. 'Mr. Carrington' makes me feel old." You are old, Amy thought. Just like my mother. But at least he had a nice boyish smile. It was the kind of smile she thought Eric would have if he picked her up for a date. As if. "Mom will be down in a minute." He looked at the TV set. "You're watching The Simpsons!" Now Amy was embarrassed. "Not really. I was doing my homework and just put it on for the noise Ч " "I love The Simpsons!" Brad exclaimed. "It's my favorite show!" "Really?" Amy asked. "Me too! Did you see the one where Homer met Michael Jackson?" "That's one of my favorites," Brad told her. "Didn't you crack up when Homer tried to do the Moonwalk?" "My very favorite is the one where Lisa has to baby-sit for Bart," Amy confided. They were still sharing stories of favorite Simpsons episodes when Amy's mother came down the stairs. "Hello, Brad," Nancy said. Amy watched Brad closely. He was obviously impressed with Nancy's appearance, but he stayed cool. "Hi, Nancy. It's great to see you again." Nancy smiled. "Should I take a coat?" |
