"Ms. Dutot is required to leave the country without delay."

The immigration official spoke in a stony voice.

"Given Ms. Dutot's widowed status and expired work visa, we have no
choice but to deny her further residence."

Burton held up a hand.

"Pause. Rewind. Are you saying she can't stay because she isn't
married to a Canadian citizen?"

"That is correct." The official turned to Veronique: "You are required
to file a deposition at the Customs and Immigration office. We can
accommodate you immediately."

Before she could answer, Burton put his arm around her waist and drew
her to his side.

"That won't be necessary, will it ... darling?" She glanced up, eyes
wide. He held her gaze, hoping she wouldn't flinch.

"Wh-what are you talking about?" She tried to tug away, but he held
her fast.

Smiling through gritted teeth, he replied, "I'm talking about our
forthcoming marriage, of course."

She was speechless, thank God.

Dear Reader, Years ago I sailed to Tahiti on a fifty-five-foot yacht
built and captained by my father. I've been fascinated with the
tropical French colony ever since. So when I needed a foreign heroine
for my "green card" marriage, Tahiti seemed the natural homeland for my
heroine. Or perhaps more accurately, became home for a heroine in
search of a story, for Veronique has resided in my imagination for
quite some time. I can readily relate to her homesick feelings, living
as I d&in Australia, far removed from family and Mends in Canada.

I had a lot of fun writing Temporary Wife. At one point I was calling
television stations, trying to interview a producer and having little
success. Then, through a serendipitous turn of events, a producer
called me, looking for a romance writer to appear as a celebrity guest
on a local cooking showi Naturally I leapt at the chance. Not only did
I experience on a small scale what my heroine faced as a television
