the odds just went up. We have a responsibility to our sponsors.
Hell, we won't have any sponsors if we don't come up with the goods."

"And just who are these sponsors?" Burton demanded.

"California tomato growers? Housing developers? People who have a
vested interest in seeing a show like this fail?"

"Fact one," Murphy said, ignoring Burton's question, "Channel Seven is
in a slump. Sponsors are getting nervous, and that means tighter purse
strings. Fact two, the board of directors wants something fresh and
exciting. They came up with some suggestions at their meeting last

the files.

"Why the hell they pay me to be vice president of programming, I don't

"Here we go," he said, pulling out a file folder and opening it.

"One of their ideas is not half-bad--a cooking show." Burton stared in
disbelief.

"A cooking show?"

"You betcherlife. And you're going to produce it." Burton gave a
short, mirthless laugh.

"What I know about cooking wouldn't fill a measuring cup. Get Trudy
to do it."

Murphy grunted.

"You're lucky it was me who heard that sexist remark and not the lady
in question."

Burton gestured impatiently.

"I only meant because she likes cooking shows. She told me she watches
them all the time."

"Trudy is booked up. You've got a hole to fill. Summer's coming and
it's always slow what with reruns and fill-ins. We've got to give the
ratings a kick up the backside."

"You think a cooking show is the answer? Come on, Murph."

"You'll make it happen."

Burton pushed a hand through his hair.
