More scheming takes place in the kingdom of Dherrica as Palle, brother of the queen,
murders his sister and frames his nephew, Prince Pirse, for the crime. Shielded by the
populace, who respect their princeтАЩs dragon-slaying abilities, Pirse hides from his uncle
and unexpectedly falls in love with Down, a widowed dyer. Together they conceive a
daughter, Emlie, the first of a desperately needed new generation of Dreamers.
Meanwhile, in Shrine, the only kingdom ruled by a just and good king, the twin heirs
to the throne, Princess Jeyn and Prince Chasa, struggle to come to terms with their
betrotheds. Jeyn rejects the man originally chosen for her, and falls in love instead with
the minstrel Ivey. ChasaтАЩs childhood betrothed, Feather, suffered through traumatic
events as a young girl that erased many of her memories. When she returns to Sitrine
as an adult, she no longer knows Chasa, but falls in love with his father, King Sene,
instead.
Through it all, the wizards Aage and Morb use their Dreamer skills to fight off
invasion attempts from the Others, and prayed that more of the prophesized Dreamer
children would be born, to grow up and use their magic to protect the world.
That is, if DamonтАЩs thirst for power doesnтАЩt destroy everything first.
