The short man remained behind the door, out of sight, but Ryan could see his shadow. The man shook
his head.

Ryan heard the men laugh. Then the light at the bottom of the door went out.

тАЬNice try,тАЭ Ryan said, moving toward the wall.

тАЬYou think you can do better?тАЭ Darrion said.

тАЬYeah, I think I can.тАЭ

тАЬIтАЩd like to see you try,тАЭ she said.

Ryan felt along the wall,then stood.

тАЬWhy didnтАЩt you tell me you wanted some light?тАЭ He switched on a flashlight and pointed the beam to
her face.

тАЬWhereтАЩd you get it?тАЭ

тАЬI saw it when the guy opened the door. They must have put it down when they brought you in and
forgot about it.тАЭ
Ryan handed the flashlight to Darrion. She shone it in his face.


тАЬWhat did you say your name was?тАЭ

тАЬRyan,тАЭ he said, squinting in the light.

тАЬRyan Daley. What kind of a name is Darrion?тАЭ

тАЬWhatтАЩs wrong with it?тАЭ she said.

тАЬNothing, itтАЩs just unusual.тАЭ

тАЬTake that up with my parents,тАЭ she said.

тАЬSo, what happened today, with the explosions and everything?тАЭ
