УBecause heТd never have assigned me to this prayer request if he had anyone else to send. We both know that.Ф
УBut he might never give you another assignment if you continue to do crazy stunts like that.Ф
УSure he will. Gabriel has a soft spot in his heart for the three of us. I venture to say weТre his favorites, although heТd never let us know that.Ф
Goodness stared at her with round, disbelieving eyes.
УHeТll forgive me just about anything,Ф Mercy continued, undaunted, Уbecause IТm going to find a way to teach Leah what she must learn and as soon as she does, sheТll become pregnant.Ф
УMercy, have you been sniffing the eggnog again?Ф
УDonТt be ridiculous.Ф
УBut youТve got the most difficult assignment by far. How can you be so confident LeahТs ever going to learn what she must when so many others have failed?Ф
УSimple,Ф Mercy said with a cocky tilt to her head, УIТm going to teach her. Now stop worrying about me. LetТs concentrate on whatТs happening with you and Monica Fischer.Ф
Goodness adjusted her wings around the troublesome light fixture. УI hate to admit it, but IТm worried. She really likes this Chet fellow.Ф
УChet who?Ф
УChet Costello. HeТs a private investigator and from what IТve managed to learn of him .а.а. let me just say this, Gabriel would need to assign a legion of angels to work with him.Ф
УYouТre sure MonicaТs infatuated with him?Ф
Goodness nodded. УI read her journal this morning and it was full of all the things she felt while he kissed her. She said she never knew that kissing could be this good or that a woman felt those kinds of things when a man touched her.Ф
УOh, my.Ф Mercy waved her hand in front of her heated face.
УAnd thatТs not the half of it.Ф
УYou mean thereТs more?Ф
УShe wrote that she felt herself responding to him even when she promised herself she wouldnТt and how disappointed she was when he stopped.Ф
УDo you think Michael knows about Chet?Ф
УNo one knows, not even her father. She raced home afterwards and went directly to her room, where she wrote everything down. When her father came to ask if she wanted dinner, Monica claimed she wasnТt hungry.Ф
УKissing is better than food?Ф This was a whole new thought to Mercy.
УApparently so.Ф
Goodness wrung her hands once more, then blurted out, УSay something. Anything. I need help.Ф
Mercy slowly shook her head back and forth. УYouТve got trouble.Ф
УI know that, otherwise I wouldnТt be here. What do you suggest?Ф
Mercy thought long and hard. УWe both need to talk to Shirley. SheТs much better at deciphering these matters than we are.Ф
УLetТs meet at Reverend FischerТs church at midnight in the choir loft,Ф Goodness suggested as she elegantly slid off the dangling fixture. УIТll see you then.Ф
Mercy nodded.

Goodness fully intended to leave the shopping mall right then and return to Monica, who was sitting in the church office typing up the bulletin for the Sunday morning worship service. But when she shot past a video store, she skidded to a stop. Mercy seemed confident that Gabriel would leave them on their assignments because he was so shorthanded. Maybe she should test her friendТs theory, and have a little fun herself.
Row upon row of television screens faced her. There must have been over fifty in various sizes and shapes, all tuned to the same channel. The temptation was too much to resist.
She hesitated and laughed silently at the thought of her face showing up on all fifty screens at once. The mere suggestion was her downfall. If Mercy could ride up and down the escalator then she should be able to enjoy a few short moments of notoriety.
УThis is our best model,Ф the salesman was saying, stepping over to the wide twenty-five-inch screen. The salesman was busily showing an older couple the capabilities of the remote control when Goodness popped onto the screen.
УWhatТs that?Ф The grandmotherly woman pointed to the television.
УIt seems to be a .а.а. woman with wings,Ф the man with her added.
УWings?Ф The salesman quickly adjusted the buttons. УWe had it tuned to a game show earlier. ItТs nothing to worry about, folks, this happens sometimes. IТll just change the channel.Ф
УThe same woman appears to be on that channel as well,Ф the woman said. УIf I didnТt know better IТd say it was an .а.а. angel. Do you think sheТs trying to tell us something, Delbert?Ф
УShe sure is,Ф the man grumbled. УSheТs saying we shouldnТt be buying this fancy new television when the one weТve got is perfectly fine.Ф
УDonТt be ridiculous. This is the punishment you get for skipping mass last Sunday. GodТs sent this angel to show you the error of your ways. Then againФЧshe hesitated while Goodness adjusted her wings for showЧУshe might be telling us we should pick up some lottery tickets on our way home.Ф
The salesman was becoming more and more agitated as he punched a variety of buttons on the remote control. УIТm sure thereТs been some mistake.Ф He looked around and shouted, УHarry! I think it might be a good idea if I have the manager took a look at this.Ф
УIТve seen enough,Ф the older man said, reaching for his wifeТs arm. УLetТs get out of here.Ф
УIt has to do with you missing church, IТm sure of it.Ф
УDonТt be ridiculous,Ф her husband said with annoyance.
УWe are going to stop for lottery tickets on the way home, arenТt we?Ф

УWe donТt do this nearly often enough.Ф JodyТs mother set the pot of tea on the oak kitchen table.
УI agree,Ф Jody said, slipping into the chair across from her mother. She didnТt drop by to visit her mother as often as she had before her fatherТs death earlier in the year. Her childhood home stirred far too many memories. Privately Jody wondered how her mother managed. Perhaps it wasnТt so difficult to understand. Jody continued to live in the tiny two-bedroom house she and Jeff had purchased when sheТd first learned she was pregnant with Timmy. Giving up even this small part of her life with her late husband was more than she could have borne.
УWhereТs Timmy this evening?Ф Helen Chandler wanted to know.
Jody smiled although she knew her mother didnТt understand her amusement. УHeТs spending the night with his good friend, Rick Trenton.Ф
УI thought it was Ricky.Ф
