* * * Arthur Bernstein, archaeologist, was sweating. He was nauseous, too, from the erratic flight of the chopper. He pawed at the collar of his shirt, trying to loosen it, and popped a button off in the process. He attempted to wiggle his toes in his boots, then realized, to his consternation, that his feet were swollen and numb. He took a deep breath and hoisted himself up, using the strap hanging from the roof of the chopper that he had held onto during the flight. Two of his hand-picked assistants, Jim Gleason and Bob Haney, both experienced archaeologists, eyed him. He nodded at the men. "What did he say?" he called to Mr. Wyan, the leader of the expedition, who handed the walkie-talkie to an assistant. " They've found it, Dr. Bernstein," Wyan stated. Bernstein forgot about his swollen feet and shuffled his way past crates of equipment until he came alongside Wyan, who towered over him. "Are we going down, then?" he asked, wiping another gush of sweat from his forehead. Wyan smoothed back his dark slick hair. "As soon as you're up to it, Doctor," he said in a derogatory tone. Bernstein wiped his forehead and signaled Gleason and Haney to join him. "We're ready, Mr. Wyan," he said, shifting his bulk from one leg to the other. Wyan looked at him with cold, unblinking eyes. Bernstein felt his nausea increase as those eyes bored into him. He looked away. He's got the eyes of a sharkЧmerciless, hethought. And that nasty scar above his left eye only adds to the effect. I wonder how he got it? Bernstein's two associates joined them. Wyan had been standing in the cargo bay door of the chopper, and as he moved away Bernstein's team got their first real look at the site. "Incredible," Bernstein said, looking out the cargo door at the lighted megaliths of stone. Gleason, who served as Bernstein's photographer, snapped several pictures. "The last time the stone was uncovered was just after Constantinople fell to the Turks," Wyan said. "Over five hundred years have passed." "But we still can't be sure the site hasn't been compromised," Bernstein said. "The Arab tribesmen believe that there are evil jinn out here. They avoid the place at all costs," Wyan stated. Bernstein turned to Gleason and Haney. "These megaliths, some of them weighing over thirty tons, predate the Arabs by centuries. When these were placed here, our ancestors were running around in loincloths and living in caves." Wyan arched a hand skyward. "Your team should be aware that these giant stones were put here by our friends, the Watchers." "And will we be able to complete all the necessary arrangements before the reemergence of the Bethlehem star?" Bernstein asked. "The star will emerge during the full lunar eclipse next month, so you should have plenty of time for your excavation. But we must utilize the time we have, so . . ." Wyan gestured toward the giant stone megalith, then added, "Mr. Kenson will accompany us." Bernstein saw Kenson emerge from the partition separating Wyan and his associate from Bernstein's team and the rest of the crew Kenson was a striking young man, just over six feet tall with neatly trimmed premature gray hair, dark brooding |
