УYou call this hope?Ф he whispered hoarsely. One couldnТt trust the gods.

Lachesis looked at him with pity. Then her lips twisted in a wry smile. УA godТs
hope can be cloaked.Ф

УHow dare you.Ф He did not raise his voice. His heart, which he thought could not
possibly be touched, trembled.

УI dare,Ф Lachesis said simply. Before he could protest, she put both hands flat
against his bare chest and shoved.

His blasted wings threw him off balance. He stumbled backward, expecting to
strike a tree. But neither tree nor ground stopped his tumble. He simply fell into the
darkness.

Rose glanced at her wristwatch. Two-thirty a.m. She had finished checking her
patients, updated everyoneТs charts and was ready to turn everything over to Kym, her
replacement who was late. Rose was about to call a standby when Kym floated into the
lounge.

УHappy ValentineТs Day,Ф Kym crowed.

УYou better have a good excuse.Ф Rose handed her log to Kym. Kym simply
beamed. УHave you been drinking?Ф

УWorse.Ф Kym thrust out her hand. УTony proposed.Ф

Rose stared at the diamond ring and felt the jealousy monster stab her in the heart.
УOh, wow.Ф

Kym was too wound up to notice the less than enthusiastic response. УAnd I want
you to be my maid of honor.Ф

The knife twisted in her heart. Rose could barely catch her breath. УI donТt know
what to say.Ф She gave Kym a hug. УCongrats. Tony is lucky to have such a wonderful
woman.Ф She pulled back, gripping KymТs shoulders. УWe were supposed to become
spinsters together.Ф

Kym hugged her again. УI know. I know. I canТt wait to show everyone.Ф And she
practically skipped out of the room.

Rose was happy for her. Just not at this particular moment. And that made her feel
guilty. Thank God her shift was over and she could go home and wallow in her own
self-pity.
