УHarvard? Dartmouth?Ф Charlie mumbled, unable to conceal his awe. УWell thatТs pretty . . . thatТs something. Yeah, but the University of Alaska . . . you wouldnТt really consider that when you could go Ivy League. I mean, your father would want you to . . .Ф

УCarlisleТs always fine with whatever I choose to do,Ф Edward told him serenely.

УHmph.Ф

УGuess what, Edward?Ф I asked in a bright voice, playing along.

УWhat, Bella?Ф

I pointed to the thick envelope on the counter. УI just gotmy acceptance to the University of Alaska!Ф

УCongratulations!Ф He grinned. УWhat a coincidence.Ф

CharlieТs eyes narrowed and he glared back and forth between the two of us. УFine,Ф he muttered after a minute. УIТm going to go watch the game, Bella. Nine-thirty.Ф

That was his usual parting command.

УEr, Dad? Remember the very recent discussion about my freedom . . . ?Ф

He sighed. УRight. Okay, ten -thirty. You still have a curfew on school nights.Ф

УBellaТs no longer grounded?Ф Edward asked. Though I knew he wasnТt really surprised, I couldnТt detect any false note to the sudden excitement in his voice.

УConditionally,Ф Charlie corrected through his teeth. УWhatТs it to you?Ф

I frowned at my dad, but he didnТt see.

УItТs just good to know,Ф Edward said. УAlice has been itching for a shopping partner, and IТm sure Bella would love to see some city lights.Ф He smiled at me.

But Charlie growled, УNo!Ф and his face flushed purple.

УDad! WhatТs the problem?Ф

He made an effort to unclench his teeth. УI donТt want you going to Seattle right now.Ф

УHuh?Ф

УI told you about that story in the paper Ч thereТs some kind of gang on a killing spree in Seattle and I want you to steer clear, okay?Ф

I rolled my eyes. УDad, thereТs a better chance that IТll get struck by lightning than that the one day IТm in Seattle ЧФ

УNo, thatТs fine, Charlie,Ф Edward said, interrupting me. УI didnТt mean Seattle. I was thinking Portland, actually. I wouldnТt have Bella in Seattle, either. Of course not.Ф

I looked at him in disbelief, but he had CharlieТs newspaper in his hands and he was reading the front page intently.

He must have been trying to appease my father. The idea of being in danger from even the most deadly of humans while I was with Alice or Edward was downright hilarious.

It worked. Charlie stared at Edward for one second more, and then shrugged. УFine.Ф He stalked off toward the living room, in a bit of a hurry now Ч maybe he didnТt want to miss tip-off.
