"Alexis Morgan - Dark Protector" - читать интересную книгу автора (Morgan Alexis)would be relentless in their pursuit of revenge. But he had no choice now. If he destroyed Bane, the
Paladins might kill him. If he failed, the voice would for sure. тАЬLook whoтАЩs back.тАЭ Another voice chimed in. тАЬIтАЩve always figured him to be teacherтАЩs pet. None of us get to take five days off when the mountain is letting off steam.тАЭ тАЬBoth of you go to hell.тАЭ Devlin said it because it was expected. If heтАЩd failed to respond to his menтАЩs taunts, they wouldтАЩve been worried about him. He disappeared into his office and sat down. Despite his earlier assurances to Laurel, his leg ached and his head was pounding. But heтАЩd had worse and survivedтАФa bit of grim humor that made him smile. D.J. followed him into his office and made himself comfortable on the corner of DevтАЩs desk. тАЬSo how is the lovely Dr. Young? Does she miss me?тАЭ тАЬNot so youтАЩd notice. She did hang up your posters, though, if that means anything to you.тАЭ Devlin turned his attention to his computer and began working his way through the e-mails that had piled up since his death earlier in the week. Even after eliminating all the tongue-in-cheek condolences from his Paladin friends, there was a depressing amount of information left to deal with. тАЬReally? She actually put them up? I thought sheтАЩd come after me with a dull syringe.тАЭ D.J. looked disappointed. тАЬI doubt sheтАЩll leave them up long. She still prefers puppies and kittens.тАЭ Devlin scanned the first few entries, absorbing the most recent reports of increased pressure along the fault lines. тАЬAny word from Ordnance when they want to send us out?тАЭ D.J. shook his head. тАЬNo, but Colonel Kincade has been in several times throwing his weight around.тАЭ тАЬHe was at the lab checking on me, too.тАЭ D.J. frowned. тАЬWhy would he show up there? He knows that itтАЩs up to Dr. Neal and the others to тАЬI wish I knew.тАЭ His mouth quirked up in a reluctant smile. тАЬDr. Young ran him off.тАЭ тАЬWish I could have been there to see that. Imagine, the big, bad colonel being chased by our favorite Handler.тАЭ D.J. laughed, then dropped his voice to a tense whisper. тАЬThink heтАЩll retaliate for her standing up to him?тАЭ тАЬIf he can without getting caught. HeтАЩs a vindictive son of a bitch.тАЭ They all despised the colonel for his arrogance and casual disregard for the lives of those who served under his orders. He couldnтАЩt hurt the Paladins as easily as he could others, but over time, even they paid a high price for his carelessness. тАЬDid you warn her?тАЭ Devlin shook his head. тАЬNot yet, but I have to go back the day after tomorrow. WeтАЩll talk then.тАЭ And heтАЩd give her an earful about a lot of things. He didnтАЩt want her interfering again in Paladin business. Her responsibility began when a Paladin was carried into her lab dead, and ended when he walked out alive again. It had always been that way and with good reason. Eventually she would have to make a decision to permanently end a PaladinтАЩs life. She had much too soft a heart already. If she made friends with her charges, it would destroy her when she had to put one of them down. The door opened and Lonzo Jones poked his head in. тАЬD.J., we need you to come look at something.тАЭ D.J. pushed himself back up to his feet with a long-suffering sigh. тАЬWhat did you idiots do to the system this time? I swear, I walk away and you start pushing buttons and twisting dials just to watch the pretty lights flash.тАЭ Devlin was just as glad to have his office to himself for a while. D.J. was one of his closest friends, which meant he could see past the badass personality Devlin had spent decades perfecting. If someone was willing to kill him, anyone close to him might be in danger, as well. D.J. and the others could take care of themselves, but there was the little problem of Dr. Laurel Young. |
