Unless you are an etymologist, reading the Bible is useless and a waste of time. Who knows what words meant 2000 years ago? Words evolve just as human kind does. (Ancient Hebrew had no vowels; they were added later, Greek too evolved over the years. Why is it that the bible is devoid of humor? (In the field of clinical psychotherapy, the best clients are intelligent, mentally healthy, and have a good sense of humor.) Why is it that the bible is absent of any humor? There might be inside jokes of which contemporary scholars are unaware. Modern Christian society has a habit of projecting contemporary morals, values, language, tradition, and customs of today to those who lived 2000 years ago. I am certain that 99% of our present population is unaware of the crude language in the original King James Version of the bible. They would be banned in schoolrooms today.. The population of the Middle East 2000 years ago was not dainty in its speech; vulgarity was common. Men and women had intercourse were they planted their crops thinking their crops too will fructify. In the Old Testament, the name we know as Joseph means УYahwehТs penisФ (now you know the truth about me) I was called a prick by a very angry cop I had as a client. He threatened to throw me off the balcony of my office. I am certain that if Jesus were alive today (I mean in the flesh) he would probably fall off his chair with laughter when he heard how Christians interpret his words. He probably would go into hysterics if he heard how people of today changed the meaning of УhisФ words. Jesus did his share of cussing (the fig tree incident) and all other things that frustrated him, just as people do today. The fig tree incident, cursing the fig tree for not bearing figs on an off season, proves that Jesus was high on drugs (very common at that time in the middle where poppy plants grow). Or had a good sense of humor. DonТt think that people 2000 years ago did not have a sense of humor; there was plenty of it in the Old and New Testament. The primary problem emerged when early Christians who had no sense of humor edited it all out. So, what remains today are uptight and frustrated people with a humorless god and his humorless bible Newton Joseph, Ph.D. [email protected] |
