I rose quickly to strike her in the face for even daring to associate herself with my grandfather.

I stopped abruptly. I hated what I was feeling. This woman had kept Stanworth at the police against
his will, had forced her way into my home, and had threatened the life of the woman I loved. SheтАЩd
then used these things as the Pisces Greeting of Lives, which tied my hands. I hated her actions and I
hated her.

But she was the path calling to me.

She was unimpressed at my move. Rather, she showed a slight smile.

тАЬYouтАЩve quite a temper there, Mariner.тАЭ

I regained my composure.

тАЬI am Deborah Mariner, not Mariner. Mariner is the highest position of authority among my people.
My grandfather, Hundar Knowler, was the last Mariner. You will call me Miss Mariner.тАЭ

тАЬPretty formal. How about Deborah?тАЭ At my frozen stare, she backed off. тАЬOkay, bad idea. Miss
Mariner it is.тАЭ

тАЬYou have safety from the Greeting of Lives,тАЭ I told her sharply. тАЬI will honor that, though you forced
it on me. You do not have, nor will you get, any more hospitality from us. State your business and
leave.тАЭ I considered her carefully. тАЬDo both very quickly.тАЭ

She nodded.

тАЬCanтАЩt say as I blame you. Captain said I could expect this kind of reception.тАЭ She rubbed the back of
her neck. тАЬHe didnтАЩt mention this, though.
