тАЬDidnтАЩt keep them from getting killed,тАЭ the third one said with a hard laugh. тАЬAnd they were half
breeds, not mongoloid.тАЭ

тАЬYouтАЩd be smart to shut up, Robby,тАЭ Kendall said. тАЬMarinerтАЩs different from her parents. SheтАЩs only
quarter Pisces by blood, but all Pisces every other way. Piss her off and sheтАЩll hurt you bad.тАЭ

Peter W. Prellwitz - Shards Universe - Promise Tide (v1.1)

тАЬHey,тАЭ Robby retorted, тАЬIтАЩm not the one who put a knife to her sweetheartтАЩs throat.тАЭ He shook his
head and grunted. тАЬA pity, too. That girlfriend of hers, too good-looking to waste on another girl.тАЭ

тАЬPig!тАЭ Kendall snapped.

тАЬThatтАЩs enough!тАЭ the leader ordered. тАЬYouтАЩre not going to make a good impression if youтАЩre fighting
like that when she gets here in a few minutes.тАЭ

тАЬSheтАЩs been here for a few minutes,тАЭ I said, standing and entering the clearing. тАЬAnd youтАЩre right. IтАЩm
not impressed.тАЭ

Their reaction was expected. Grandfather had trained me long ago how to use my peopleтАЩs abilities to
read and understand others. He had prepared me well for my life and his quest.

The leader remained quiet, turning casually toward me. Kendall had jerked around and taken a step
back. In the moonlight, it was easy to see her quickly going over everything she had said, worried she
may have angered me. I chose to help her in her cautiousness.

тАЬDonтАЩt worry, Lieutenant,тАЭ I said. тАЬYou didnтАЩt say anything to offend me. Instead you should worry
that my love is not here to be used against me.тАЭ Her eyes widened slightly and she held her breath.

I swung my eyes to the third one. He had spun around, startled, and had gone into an attack position.
I walked toward him in a graceful stalk.

тАЬYou are afraid of me?тАЭ I asked.

He said nothing, but his heart began racing.

тАЬYou should be. You dishonored my parents, slandered me, and made crude remarks about my
lover.тАЭ His temperature rose and his forehead showed it. тАЬYou do not approve my use of the word
lover? What then?тАЭ I reached my hand toward him, to touch him.

Snapped from his thrall, he reached to his belt and drew his gun. I laughed and reacted.

тАЬBarringer, no!тАЭ the leader shouted.

тАЬItтАЩs all right,тАЭ I said, now standing behind my would-be assailant. тАЬI have his gun.тАЭ
