word Happy refused to remember. His teeth clash and his hackles rise. It is
hard to keep from growling.

тАЬYou should have thought of that at the airport. Mr. Show biz.тАЭ She
goes on in BrentтАЩs voice, тАЬтАШ I rescued him.тАЩ Like you didnтАЩt see the phones
and camcorders. Screen shots. Everybody knows!тАЭ

тАЬWell, tough. Nobody sees him until the press conference. Dad is
talking eight figures.тАЭ

HappyтАЩs insides shift. He is confused. Wolves donтАЩt think in figures.

Brent barks, тАЬDriver, get off at National.тАЭ

тАЬWhat are you thinking?тАЭ

тАЬGonna hide him!тАЭ

тАЬNot in this town,тАЭ Susan says. Distracted, sheтАЩs let parts of herself
flow into Happy. She thinks he is asleep. Parts of him flow back and she
lets him.
 тАЬOutskirts. Inland empire. The valley.тАЭ

She says, тАЬToo close.тАЭ Happy leans a little closer; she shrugs him off,
but he slips back and she lets him. It is hard for him to keep from smiling.
They ride along like this for a while. At last she says thoughtfully, тАЬYour
mom stayed back in Caverness, right?тАЭ

тАЬShe did,тАЭ Brent says and then he just stops talking.

The car rounds a corner and Happy leans into the body next to his,
but only a little bit. He can feel her voice vibrating in his bones. тАЬThen take
him to your momтАЩs.тАЭ

Warm, she is so warm.

тАЬNo way. She hasnтАЩt forgiven me for losing him.тАЭ

Something changes in the car. тАЬYou lost him?тАЭ
