ONE MAN'S STORY

Twenty years ago, onThanksgiving Day, a family
sat down to a meager meal. If they had contacted a local
charity group, they would have had a turkey with all the
trimmings. But they hadn't. Why? Because, like many
families, they were proud people. They would make do
with what they had.
'Me frustration and hopelessness the family felt
caused some angry words. The eldest son felt devas-
tated as he watched the people he loved in such a
depressed state.
Suddenly, there was a loud knock at the door.
young man opened it, and there stood a fellow in rumpled
clothing, carrying a huge basket brimming with good-
ies: a turkey, stuffing, pies, sweet potatoes, canned
goods-everything for aThanksgiving feast!
'Me family was stunned.The man at the door said,
"Mis is from someone who knows you're in need, and
wants you to know that you're loved and cared for." At
first, the father of the family didn't want to take the
goods, but the man said, "Look, I'm just a delivery
person." Smiling, he set the boxes in the boy's arms,
turned and left, calling over his shoulder, "Have a great
'Manksgiving!"
On that day, this young man learned that there's
always hope, that people really do care. He swore to
himself that someday he'd do well enough to give some-
thing back to others. And by the time he had turned 18,
he had begun to fulfill that promise. With his scant

earnings he purchased groceries for two families who
were in need, bringing the food as a delivery person
rather than as the giver. With this one act 13 years ago,
he began a quest that continues to this day: to return the
gift that was given to him and his family and to remind
people that there is always a way to turn things around,
