"Where did you ever hear such bullshit?"

"My source is irrelevant. The accusation is not without merit, or I wouldnтАЩt give it the slightest attention.
Someone has reported to me that you are being disloyal. The claim is that youтАШre about to turn, to go
over to the Barons."

Curtis laughed.

To Fayanne, relying entirely upon her hearing to interpret the conversation the laugh rang false. Oh.
Curtis! she thought. How could you be so dumb?

"Someone has been feeding you a line. Mr. Bad," Curtis declared.

"Have they?"

"Sure. I wouldnтАЩt be so stupid as to try and double-cross you. I know what would happen if I did."

"You underrate yourself," Mr. Bad said. "YouтАЩre extremely intelligent, Curtis. Too intelligent. in fact.
YouтАЩve taken a long look at the grass on the other side of the fence, and youтАЩve decided itтАЩs greener
over there."
"No way, man. IтАЩd never cross you," Curtis reiterated. and expelled a long breath. "Is it getting hot in
here or what?"

"IтАЩll have Claw open a window in a moment." Mr. Bad offered. "First though, to business. Where were
you one week ago at eleven P.M.?"

"IтАЩd have to think about it. I might have been with one of the whores on Sepulveda Boulevard."

"Or you mightтАЩve been with Owsley."

Curtis Jenson must have stood up because Mr. Bad suddenly snapped, "Sit down."

"Whoever told you I was with Owsley is a liar!"

"Sit down, Curtis." The words were razor sharp and as heavy as steel.

"IтАЩm sitting," Curtis said. "Man is it ever hot in here."

"After all IтАЩve done for you, Curtis, IтАЩm disappointed you would see fit to betray me. I was the one who
took you in off the streets and trained you, who made you one of my trusted dealers. And now youтАЩve
thrown that trust back in my face."

"I didnтАЩt, Haywood. Really I didnтАЩt."

Fayanne flinched The bastard hated for anyone to use his real name. For some reason he despised the
name his parents had bestowed on him at birth: Haywood Keif.

"Then perhaps you can explain this." Mr. Bad inquired.

Curtis gasped.
