gun was the long-barreled, heavy blue gun which only a sportsman would carry; it was too expensive for
the average woodsman.

тАЬListen to me,тАЭ he repeated. тАЬListen to what I say. I have been in hell over this thing. I did not know what
to do. I was responsible for it, yet it was an accident, and I did not know what to do, or which way to
turn.тАЭ

Monk stared at him. тАЬYou caused their deaths, eh?тАЭ

тАЬYes. Accidentally.тАЭ

тАЬHow?тАЭ

The young man shook his head. тАЬI am sorry.тАЭ

тАЬAnybody who kills anybody is usually sorry,тАЭ Monk agreed. тАЬBut how'd you do it?тАЭ

тАЬI am sorryтАФI cannot tell you.тАЭ

тАЬHuh?тАЭ

тАЬI cannot.тАЭ

тАЬYou did it with the tidal wave, huh?тАЭ Monk jeered.

The young man met this question with a rather horrible, staring silence. Monk gazed at him, dumfounded.
тАЬBlazes!тАЭ Monk yelled. тАЬYou didn't make that tidal wave!тАЭ

The other was silent.

Monk, starkly unbelieving, said, тАЬTell us a lie if you want to, but don't tell us one that big!тАЭ

The young man continued to just stare. The snake he had eaten, figuratively, was in his eyes, the ghastly
set of his face.

Monk turned to the others. тАЬYou hear what he said?тАЭ

This should have been a foolish question, but somehow it wasn't.

No one answered.

тАЬTwo things,тАЭ Monk said solemnly. тАЬTwo things. Two possibilities. Either he's crazy, or he's lying.тАЭ

They did not answer this time either, but they agreed.

тАЬLucky we brought some truth serum,тАЭ Monk said. тАЬWe'll use that on him.тАЭ

The young man with the gun went through a kind of convulsion. Decision and indecision fought on his
face; fear and courage struggled there.
