тАЬYes.тАЭ

At least, there was only one day gap in his life.

тАЬO. K.,тАЭ Renny said. тАЬThanks.тАЭ

тАЬMr. Gerson,тАЭ said the operator.

тАЬEh?тАЭ

тАЬI heard from the hospital. You just broke Betty's arm, that was all.тАЭ

Renny jumped. тАЬIтАФ Holy cow! I broke a girl's arm! When?тАЭ

тАЬOh, Mr. Gerson, you say the cutest things,тАЭ the operator simpered. тАЬIt was last night. Don't you
remember?тАЭ

тАЬNo! I don't remember!тАЭ

The operator said, still simpering, тАЬIt's all right, Palsy. You scared Betty good, and she won't dare say
anything to a cop.тАЭ
Renny blinked. тАЬI scared her good, eh?тАЭ

тАЬYou sure did. Betty is deathly afraid of a knife.тАЭ

Renny's eyes went to the chest of drawers, and he mumbled, тАЬThanks,тАЭ and hung up. He went to the
chest of drawers, stood ogling the knife lying there.

The knife was about the most vicious-looking thing Renny had seen in the way of knives. He bent close,
eyeing it. And the short hairs on the back of his neck got on end. For there were, unless he was badly
mistaken, dried bloodstains on the knife blade.

He tried to say, тАЬHoly cow!тАЭ and didn't say anything.

HE sank in the chair again, making another attempt to remember something about what could have
happened to him. His thinking efforts got him nothing but a foggy aching. He got out and prowled.

He prowled the clothes closet. None of the clothing there was at all familiar. And the gaudy suits with a
zoot cut were things he wouldn't have been seen dead in. Alarmed by the zoot suits, he went into the
bathroom for another look at that sinful faceтАФand the suit he was wearing. It was a zooter, all right.

He was startled enough to go a foot off the floor when the door opened and a girl came in.

She wasn't a bad-looking girl, was his first thought.

тАЬHy'ah, Palsy,тАЭ she said.

No, not at all hard on the eyes.
