Do you mind?тАЭ тАЬI'd appreciate it, Joe.тАЭ The food was good, the service excellent, and they had a satisfactory amount of privacy. But Doctor Benson was distracted, obviously absorbed with his thoughts. тАЬSomething is on your mind,тАЭ Miss Clayton said. Doctor Benson nodded soberly. тАЬAs a matter of fact, I'm worried.тАЭ тАЬWhat about?тАЭ тАЬI can't get rid of the feeling there was something wrong about that accident to Doc Savage this afternoon,тАЭ Benson said grimly. MISS CLAYTON looked at Benson thoughtfully. тАЬWhat do you really mean by that?тАЭ He made aimless marks with the tip of a spoon on the linen. тАЬI haven't been able to put my mental fingers on anything, exactly. There was just something too pat about the whole thing.тАЭ тАЬDid you mention this to Doc Savage?тАЭ тАЬNo, I didn't, although perhaps I should have. But Doc was rather painfully burned, and I didn't want to bother him with it.тАЭ тАЬI should think,тАЭ said Miss Clayton, тАЬhe would want to be bothered with something like that.тАЭ Doctor Benson gloomily finished his coffee, seemed lost in thought for an interval. He straightened. тАЬI have an idea!тАЭ he exclaimed. тАЬWhat do you say we do a bit of detecting?тАЭ Miss Clayton was definitely interested. тАЬFine! That would be more interesting than the stuffy show I was expecting you to take me to.тАЭ She gathered her handbag and gloves together. тАЬWhere do we detect first?тАЭ They got a cab outside. тАЬThe Coliseum,тАЭ Doctor Benson told the driver. He added apologetically to Miss Clayton, тАЬI don't know of anywhere else to start.тАЭ тАЬI can't think of a better place,тАЭ she told him. They looked over the scene of the accident without learning much. The burned gasoline transport truck had been removed, the two taxicabs were gone, and there was only the blackened sidewalk and seared side of the buildings to show that anything out of the ordinary had happened there late that afternoon. It was Miss Clayton who suggested that they talk to the Coliseum management, and Doctor Benson agreed. Soon they were in conference with Mr. Glizer, the Coliseum manager. |
