He didn't say anything. тАЬThis is quite interesting. It sounds fantastic.тАЭ

тАЬNot to me, now that I know you're a fantastic person . . . You did it to have a look at what Glacia had
taken out of the strongbox downstairs, I suppose?тАЭ

тАЬYou take some mighty long jumps at conclusions.тАЭ

тАЬJust a hop, that time.тАЭ

тАЬDoes yourтАФahтАФemployer share your rather unusual hallucination?тАЭ

тАЬGlacia? She hasn't said so. She hasn't said anything much, really. But I doubt it.тАЭ

тАЬI see.тАЭ

тАЬGlacia,тАЭ I said, тАЬis in the middle of some kind of a plot, and knows it.тАЭ

тАЬIndeed.тАЭ

тАЬShe's scared stiff. But she's not giving up. She's going it alone, if necessary. She just fired me.тАЭ

тАЬYou're probably fortunate.тАЭ

тАЬLucky that she fired me, you mean? . . . No. No, because I think the silly little blonde is going to need
help, and I'm going to stick by her.тАЭ

He thought deeply. The thing he was thinking about was whether or not he should shake his head
negatively. He shook it.

He said, тАЬIf I were you, I'd catch the one o'clock bus for Los Angeles.тАЭ

тАЬNo, if you were me you wouldn't do anything of the sort. I've heard about you, remember. If you had a
friend who was foolish enough to let greed get her into trouble, you'd stick.тАЭ

He said nothing to that.
тАЬShe telephoned the attorney and he's bringing the inheritance,тАЭ I said.

It was hard to tell whether he reacted to that. His flake gold eyes weren't composed. But they were not
composed at any timeтАФthe gold in them seemed always in motion, alert, wary. Presently I found I was
staring at his eyes and they were getting some sort of hypnotic spell on me, or I thought they were. I
stopped staring.

тАЬYou're in this yourself,тАЭ I said. тАЬI think you were in it before I was.тАЭ

тАЬIndeed?тАЭ

тАЬThat's just an idea that came to me. Would you mind verifying it?тАЭ

тАЬYou should catch that bus,тАЭ he said.
