Glacia blew out her breath.

тАЬDarling,тАЭ she told me. тАЬNow I can tell you about the job. It's working for me.тАЭ

тАЬFor you!тАЭ

тАЬOh, don't look so shocked. What's so bad about that?тАЭ

тАЬI don't know what's tough about it,тАЭ I said. тАЬBut I'm sure something will develop.тАЭ

Uncle Waldo chuckled. This sounded like a steam engine snorting once.

тАЬThe pay is good,тАЭ Glacia said hastily. тАЬYou'll get fifтАФтАЭ She paused and examined my expression.
тАЬEighty a week,тАЭ she corrected.
тАЬThat's too much,тАЭ I said. тАЬOr is it?тАЭ

тАЬDon't be so damned suspicious,тАЭ Glacia said.

тАЬSo there's something I should be suspicious of?тАЭ

тАЬOf course not!тАЭ She didn't sound convincing, although she tried hard enough.

тАЬWhat is this job, baby?тАЭ

Glacia evidently had an answer all ready, but suddenly decided I wouldn't believe it, and got busy trying
to think of another. While she was doing that, Uncle Waldo summarized the job.

тАЬYou hold niece's hand,тАЭ Uncle Waldo said.

He meant Glacia, of course. By holding Glacia's hand, I hoped he didn't mean what I thought he meant.
Anything that would make Glacia want her hand held probably wouldn't be easy on the nerves.



Chapter II
THE job had a snake in it somewhere. But two days passed and nothing happened and I was lulled into
a condition that might be called somewhat puzzled peace of mindтАФthe kind of an attitude where you
don't think you'll have to swim, but you take your bathing suit along just in case.

The two days had incidents enough in them, but they weren't significant incidents. Except, it later
developed, one incident was going to lead to something. For I saw Doc Savage.

Glacia was with me at the time. We came into the lobby and there was an air of hush and bated breaths
like the Second Coming.

тАЬThe redskins must have arisen,тАЭ I said.

тАЬIt's always like this when he's passing through,тАЭ said Glacia.

тАЬWhat do you mean?тАЭ
